This document will talk anyone through setting up Yanoff even if they don't
know much about how it all works or what they are doing. For the sake of
simplicity, we will assume you are currently using Outlook Express (OE)
under Windows as your current newsreader. Even if you are using some other
newsreader, you (or somebody you know) is familiar enough with OE to be able
to translate this text for use with your current newsreader.

Install Yanoff on your PC and HotSync to transfer it to your PDA.

YANOFF: Run Yanoff and Select "Server Prefs" from the "Prefs" menu.

OE: Run OE and select "Accounts" from the "Tools" menu.

COPYING A MAILSERVER CONFIGURATION:

OE: Click on the "Mail" tab. Double-click on the desired mail server in the
main pane (probably you will want to select the one designated as "(default)".
Click on the "General" tab of the window that opens.

YANOFF: Tap on the triangular listbox trigger to the left of the "Name:" label.
Select the first pre-created server from the list; it will have the text
"0:" preceding it's name. Check the "Poll:" box to enable this server.

BOTH: Copy the text from the unlabeled (topmost) field in OE to the "Name:"
field in Yanoff.

YANOFF: Do not modify the "Type:" value; leave it as "SMTP". Ignore the
"Network:" setting; it does nothing. Tap the ">>" button at the bottom of
the screen.

BOTH: Copy the text from the "Name:" field in OE to the "Realname:" field
in Yanoff. Copy the characters before the '@' sign of the text from the
"E-mail address:" field in OE to the "Username:" field in Yanoff Copy
the characters after the '@' sign of the text from the "E-mail address:"
field in OE to the "Hostname:" field in Yanoff. Copy the text from the
"Reply address:" field in OE to the "Reply-To:" field in Yanoff.

OE: Click on the "Server" tab.

YANOFF: Tap the "<<" button.

BOTH: If the "Account name:" field is blank in OE, skip this step. Otherwise,
check the "Auth:" box in Yanoff. Copy the text from the "Account name:"
field in OE to the "Auth Name:" field in Yanoff. Tap the "Tap here" box to
the right of the "Auth Pass:" label in Yanoff and enter the password that
this account uses (it cannot be copied from OE because it is displayed as
all-asterisks) in the "Password:" field on the dialog that opens; tap the
"Accept" to save it. WARNING: If "Log on using Secure Password Authentication"
is checked, it is unlikely this mailserver will work with Yanoff but it is
worth a try because this setting may actually be incorrect. Yanoff does not
(yet) support this option.

OE: Click on the "Connection" tab. If "Always connect to this account using:"
is checked, you must ensure that when accessing this server, you are connected
on the network listed. Automatic enforcement of this setting is not (yet)
implemented in Yanoff (that is what the "Network:" setting will do in some
future release). Click on the "Advanced" tab.

BOTH: Copy the number from the "Outgoing mail (SMTP):" field (it is probably
"25") in OE to the "Port:" field in Yanoff. Under the "Server Timeouts"
section in OE, look at the specific time value indicated by the slider setting
(shown to the right of the slider), translate this to seconds (minutes *
60) and enter this in the "Timeout:" field in Yanoff. WARNING: If "This
server requires a secure connection (SSL)" is checked, it is unlikely this
mailserver will work with Yanoff but it is worth a try because perhaps
your server works both ways. To test this, uncheck the option in
OE and save the change and test the server (send and receive). If it
still works, then it should with Yanoff, too. If not, then it will
not work with Yanoff buecause Yanoff does not (yet) support this option.

OE: Click the "Cancel" button to dismiss the "Properties" dialog.
Click the "Close" button to dismiss the "Internet Accounts" dialog.
Select "Options..." from the "Tools" menu. Click on the "Signatures" tab.
If the list (only) pane in the "Signatures" section is empty, skip this step
and skip the next step. Otherwise, click on the first entry. Click on the
"Advanced..." button. Scan the list of newsservers for the one which you
are copying. If it is checked, then this is the signature text you are
using for this server. Click the "Cancel" button. Check each signature
in turn to find the (potential) one which is being used for this server.
If none of the signatures has this server checked, then it is using the
"Default signature" (the first one in the list designated as such).

BOTH: Click on the signature which this server is using. Copy the text from
the "Edit Signature" section's pane in OE to the "Signature:" field in Yanoff.

YANOFF: Tap the "Save" button to save your changes.

OE: Click the "Cancel" button to dismiss the "Options" dialog.

COPYING A NEWSSERVER CONFIGURATION:

OE: Click on the "News" tab. Double-click on the desired news server in
the main pane. Click on the "General" tab of the window that opens.

Select the second pre-created server from the list; it will have the text
"1:" preceding it's name. Check the "Poll:" box to enable this server.

BOTH: Copy the text from the unlabeled (topmost) field in OE to the "Name:"
field in Yanoff.

YANOFF: Do not modify the "Type:" value; leave it as "NNTP". Ignore the
"Network:" setting; it does nothing. Tap the ">>" button at the bottom of
the screen.

BOTH: Copy the text from the "Name:" field in OE to the "Realname:" field
in Yanoff. Copy the characters before the '@' sign of the text from the
"E-mail address:" field in OE to the "Username:" field in Yanoff. Copy the
characters after the '@' sign of the text from the "E-mail address:" field
in OE to the "Hostname:" field in Yanoff. Copy the text from the "Reply
address:" field in OE to the "Reply-To:" field in Yanoff.

OE: Click on the "Server" tab.

YANOFF: Tap the "<<" button.

BOTH: If "This server requires me to log on" is NOT checked on the PC, skip
this step. Otherwise, check the "Auth:" box in Yanoff. Copy the text
from the "Account name:" field in OE to the "Auth Name:" field in Yanoff.
Tap the "Tap here" box to the right of the "Auth Pass:" label in Yanoff
and enter the password that this account uses (it cannot be copied from OE

in OE to the "Port:" field in Yanoff. Under the "Server Timeouts" section
in OE, look at the specific time value indicated by the slider setting
(shown to the right of the slider), translate this to seconds (minutes *
60) and enter this in the "Timeout:" field in Yanoff. WARNING: If "This

the "Edit Signature" section's pane in OE to the "Signature:" field in Yanoff.

YANOFF: Tap the "Save" button to save your changes.

OE: Click the "Cancel" button to dismiss the "Options" dialog.

SUBSCRIBING TO A NEWSGROUP:

YANOFF: Select "Subscribe" from the "Mgmt" menu.

OE: In the (rightmost) "Folders" pane, find the newsserver you just copied.
If it has a "+" to the left of it, double-click on it so that it has a
"-" instead. Locate the newsgroup you wish to copy in the list below the
server name.

BOTH: Copy the name exactly as it appears (letter-case does matter) in OE
to the "Name:" field in Yanoff. Tap the "Subscribe" button.

YANOFF: Modify the newsgroup settings as you desire and Tap the "Save" button.

TESTING IT ALL OUT:

Make sure you modem is hooked up to your PDA. Run Yanoff. Select "Poll"
from the "Comm" menu and wait for Yanoff to do its stuff.
