Using On-Line Help (ALT-Z)
The PROCOMM PLUS On-line Help facility provides additional help text on each screen, menu and PROCOMM PLUS function. The text is "context- sensitive", meaning that PROCOMM PLUS displays information for the function or menu you're currently using.

The Help facility includes several commands that allow you to find the text you're looking for quickly and easily:

Press ... In order to ...
[^] and [v] Scroll one line up or down.
[PgUp] Move to the next Help page.
[PgDn] Move to the previous Help page.
[Home] Jump to the first page of this Help topic.
[End] Jump to the last page of this Help topic.
[T] Display the Help topic menu.
[S] Search the current help topic for a text string. The
search is not case-sensitive. If the target string is
not found within the current topic, PROCOMM PLUS will
ask if you'd like to search the rest of the Help text.
[C] Continue the search with the same target string you
specified in the last [S]earch command.
[Esc] Exit the Help facility. PROCOMM PLUS redisplays the
                   Command menu.

If you have a mouse, you can use it to control the Help facility. Moving the mouse up and down scrolls the Help text in the same direction. While you're in the Help facility, the left mouse button displays the Help topic menu, while the right button acts as [Esc].

For more information on the Help facility, see Chapter 1 in your User Manual.
Setup Facility (ALT-S)
The Setup Facility allows you to customize PROCOMM PLUS to fit your particular needs.

To select the option group you want to see:

    - Press the letter key corresponding to the first letter in the option
      group. OR
    - Use the [v] and [^] keys to highlight it, then press [Enter].

You can change a Setup option in one of four ways, depending on the possible values:

    - By selecting from one of several choices (such as ON and OFF).
    - By typing a word or phrase (such as a message).
    - By typing a number (such as the length of a time interval).
    - By selecting one of several colors (for windows, Terminal mode and
      PCEDIT).

You select an option by pressing the corresponding letter next to it.

To change a multiple-choice option: When the cursor is in the option you want to change, press [Space] to display another value. Press [Enter] to use the displayed option, or press [Esc] to cancel the change.

To change a word or phrase in an option, move the cursor to the desired option and use these keys to change it:

Press ... In order to ...
[->] or [<-] Move the cursor to the right or left.
[Home] Move the cursor to the beginning of the field.
[End] Move the cursor to the end of the field.
[Tab] Move the cursor to the next field.
[Shift]-[Tab] Move the cursor to the previous field.
[Ins] Switch between Insert and Overtype mode.
[Del] Delete the character at the cursor.
[Backspace] Delete the character to the left of the cursor.
[Ctrl]-[End] Delete all characters from the cursor to the field's end.

To change a number or character option: When the cursor is in the option you want to change, type the number or character. If the number is a time interval, PROCOMM PLUS indicates the units of measure (for instance, seconds or milliseconds). Press [Enter] to use the new value or [Esc] to cancel the change.

To change a color option: Press the letter next to the item whose colors you want to change; PROCOMM PLUS displays a color palette containing all possible foreground/background color combinations with a box around the current value. Use the cursor keys to move the box to the desired combination (the sample display is updated as you move the cursor). When you've chosen the new value, press [Enter] to select it.

If you want your changes to be in effect the next time you use PROCOMM PLUS, you must save the changes before exiting the Setup facility. If you exit Setup without saving your changes, they will be in effect only during this PROCOMM PLUS session.

You can also exit immediately from any Setup option prompt or menu with the [F10] key. PROCOMM PLUS returns you to Terminal mode (or DOS, if you ran PCSETUP.EXE directly from the DOS prompt). The [F10] exit automatically saves any changes you've made to Setup options.

For more information, see Chapter 8 in your User Manual.

PROCOMM PLUS supports a variety of line settings. You may select baud rate, parity, the number of data and stop bits and the active COM port. The current settings are displayed at the top of this window.

The most common line settings may be configured with a single key: [Alt]-[N] for no parity, 8 data and 1 stop bit, or [Alt]-[E] for even parity, 7 data and 1 stop bit. Press 1 - 8 to select the default baud rate, and [F1] - [F8] to select the default COM port.

If you choose COM3-COM8, be sure to specify the correct base address and IRQ line for the port on the MODEM PORT ASSIGNMENTS Setup screen.

To make the settings you specify the defaults for the next time you start PROCOMM PLUS, press [Alt]-[S].

TERMINAL MODE
You are now in Terminal Mode. All of the PROCOMM PLUS functions are just a few keystrokes away. The screen you just saw is a list of those keystrokes.
ON-LINE HELP
Pressing [Alt]-[Z] will usually get you detailed help for a particular function. When you are not sure what to do, try pressing [Alt]-[Z].
STATUS LINE
In Terminal Mode, the last line of the screen is a dynamic display of current PROCOMM PLUS settings:

The Status line can be toggled ON or OFF with the Toggle Status terminal command (or you can permanently turn it off with the Setup facility).
EMULATION
PROCOMM PLUS emulates the following video terminals: TTY, DEC VT series (52/100/102/220/320), ANSI X3.64, IBM 3101/3161/3270/PC (for "doorway" use), TeleVideo 900 series (910/912/920/922/925/950/955), DG series (100/200/210), ADDS 60 and 90, ADM 3A/5/31, Wyse 50/75/100, ATT 605/4410, Heath 19 and the ESPRIT 3. The current emulation can be changed from the Setup Facility or the Pulldown Menu line.

PROCOMM PLUS' response to the Ctrl-E (ENQ) enquiry character depends on the setting you've chosen for the Enquiry Setup option; PROCOMM PLUS may ignore the ENQ character (if ENQ is set OFF), send the string stored for the Meta key [Alt]-[0] (this "answerback message" is sent if ENQ is set ON) or begin a COMPUSERVE B download (if ENQ is set to CISB).

Outgoing key codes can be changed for each emulation by using the PROCOMM PLUS Key Mapping facility ([Alt]-[F8]).

TERMINAL EMULATION
Specifies the terminal PROCOMM PLUS will emulate when connected to another computer. See Appendix F in your User Manual for the codes transmitted under each terminal emulation.
DUPLEX
Selects the Duplex mode that will be in effect when you start PROCOMM PLUS.
SOFTWARE FLOW CONTROL
Specifies whether PROCOMM PLUS is to use software flow control (XON/XOFF).
HARDWARE FLOW CONTROL
Specifies whether PROCOMM PLUS will use hardware flow control (RTS/CTS). This setting is useful for many high-speed modems.
LINE WRAP
Determines whether PROCOMM PLUS will wrap to the next line when it receives a line greater than your terminal width.
SCREEN SCROLL
Controls whether PROCOMM PLUS will scroll the screen up one line when a carriage return is received and the screen is full.
CR TRANSLATION
Determines whether or not PROCOMM PLUS will add a line feed to each carriage return received from the remote computer.
BS TRANSLATION
When set to DESTRUCTIVE, receiving a Backspace character moves the cursor to the left and deletes the character there. When set to NON-DESTRUCTIVE, the cursor moves to the left but does NOT delete the character there.
BREAK LENGTH
Specifies the length of a break (in milliseconds) sent by PROCOMM PLUS when you use the Terminal mode [Alt]-[B] sequence or the ASPECT language BREAK command word.

Specifies how PROCOMM PLUS will respond if the other computer sends an ENQ control character (Ctrl-E). When OFF, PROCOMM PLUS ignores the ENQ. When ON, it responds by sending the character string assigned to the [Alt]-[0] Meta key. When CISB, PROCOMM PLUS begins a COMPUSERVE B file transfer.
EGA/VGA TRUE UNDERLINE
Controls whether PROCOMM PLUS will display "true" underlined characters when it receives the blue-on-black attribute combination.
TERMINAL WIDTH
Specifies whether PROCOMM PLUS will use an 80 or 132-column terminal display in Terminal mode.
ANSI 7 OR 8 BIT COMMANDS
Specifies whether PROCOMM PLUS will accept 7 or 8 bit escape sequences within certain emulations.

For more information, see "Terminal Options" in Chapter 8 of your User Manual.
Menu Line (`)
The Pulldown Menu line is an alternative interface for PROCOMM PLUS. With the Menu line, you can execute most Terminal mode commands with a simple movement of the mouse or a cursor key. You can activate the Menu line with the [`] key (an unshifted tilde) or by pressing either mouse button in Terminal mode.

Redisplay Buffer (ALT-F6)
Redisplay allows you to examine text that has scrolled off your screen. PROCOMM PLUS can redisplay up to the last 63,000 characters received, starting with the most recent screen. With this facility, you can scroll through the saved text a line or a page at a time, find specific text strings and even save screen snapshots to disk.

                   Searches are not case-sensitive.
[W] Write the redisplay buffer to disk or other DOS device.

For more information, see the "Redisplay" section of Chapter 7 in your User manual.
Elapsed Time (ALT-T)
PROCOMM PLUS keeps track of how long you're connected to another computer. The current date and time are displayed, along with the elapsed time of the current call (or the last call, if you're not on-line). Press any key to return to Terminal mode.
Monitor Mode (CTRL-\)
Monitor mode sets up PROCOMM PLUS as a "raw terminal"; data sent from the remote system will appear directly on your screen. No filtering, translation or emulation is performed on characters received in Monitor Mode.

There are three special characters recognized in Monitor mode: Escape (ASCII 27) is displayed as a highlighted left arrow, the null character (ASCII 0) is displayed as a highlighted zero and decimal 255 is displayed as a highlighted question mark.

Monitor Mode allows the "debugging" of emulation sequences by displaying them as individual characters.

To enter Monitor mode, press [Ctrl]-[\]. You'll be asked whether or not to simultaneously log this information to disk. If you press [Y], PROCOMM PLUS will save the data to a file called PCPLUS.DMP in the directory specified by the PCPLUS environment variable.

To exit Monitor mode, press [Esc].

PROCOMM PLUS' Chat mode is particularly useful when using the CB Simulators on CompuServe or GEnie. Chat "splits" the screen - what you type appears on the bottom of the screen, while text received from the remote appears on top.

You can control how characters are sent to the remote computer with the Chat Mode option found on the General Options Setup menu. In BLOCK mode, the characters you type are sent to the remote computer only when you press [Enter]; in CHAR mode, each character you type is immediately sent to the remote. In BLOCK mode, CTRL-Q and CTRL-S keystrokes (for XON/XOFF flow control) are sent immediately.

When you're using the BLOCK method in Chat, limited line editing is provided for text that you type. Use the Backspace key to edit a line before it's transmitted.

Printer and disk logging are supported if they're active when you enter Chat. The redisplay buffer ([Alt-F6]) is available in Chat, as are the Metakeys [Alt]-[0] to [Alt]-[9]. Press [Esc] to exit Chat mode.

For more information, see "Chat Mode" in Chapter 7 of your User Manual.

Meta Keys (ALT-M)
Keyboard Meta keys allow you to assign character strings, ASPECT scripts, external programs and "HOOKed" external programs to the keys [Alt]-[0] through [Alt]-[9].

Meta key character strings may be up to 50 characters long, and may contain embedded control codes using the ^ translation convention described in your manual. To send the string you've assigned, simply press the corresponding key from Terminal or Chat mode.

Meta key ASPECT scripts may be compiled (*.ASX extension) or in source form (*.ASP). If no extension is provided, PROCOMM PLUS will first attempt to run a compiled script; if this fails, it attempts to compile and run a source program.

Meta key external programs can be any *.COM or *.EXE executable program or batch file. Essentially, PROCOMM PLUS performs a "shell" to DOS to run your program, so it must be able to access COMMAND.COM in the current directory (or in the directory specified by your COMSPEC environment variable). After the program completes, you're returned to PROCOMM PLUS.

"HOOK" Meta keys shell to external programs specially-written to use the current session and Setup parameters supplied by PROCOMM PLUS. For more information on "HOOKed" programs, see the file HOOK.C provided on your distribution diskettes.

After creating a Meta key file, be sure to save it to disk with the [S] option; otherwise, the keys will be discarded when you exit PROCOMM PLUS. You may create and use any number of Meta key files for use with different remote systems; by default, PROCOMM PLUS will load the file called PCPLUS.KEY at startup. Keyboard files may also be loaded via the MLOAD script command.

Multiple Meta key files give you considerable flexibility in using different host systems - you can create different .KEY files for each system that you call, then load the Meta keys for a system with an MLOAD command in a script specified in the Dialing Directory entry for that system.

From the Meta key menu:

Press ... In order to ...
[^] or [v] Select a Meta key to revise.
   [R] Revise the highlighted key.
[L] Load a new .KEY file. If you enter a filename that
doesn't currently exist, PROCOMM PLUS will create it.
[S] Save the current Meta key to disk.
[C] Clear the existing Meta key set from memory. This
command does not erase the corresponding .KEY file.
   [ESC] Return to terminal mode.

For more information, see Chapter 7 in your User Manual.
Key-Translation TX (Key Mapping) (ALT-F8)
PROCOMM PLUS lets you remap (redefine) any of 79 keys for each of its supported terminal emulations. Remapping a key changes the codes sent by that key when it is pressed.
Press [Space], [PgUp] or [PgDn] to select the emulation you wish to modify. To change a key definition, press the key you wish to change, then enter the new code and press [Enter].
To exit the keyboard mapping screen, press [ESC]. If you wish to keep the changes you have made press "Y", otherwise press "N" to abandon the changes.
[NumLock] must be active to use keypad 0 through keypad 9 and keypad period. Most control characters can be entered by typing their two- character translation; for instance, a carriage return would be entered by typing [^] and [M].
Some of the more common control characters are:
                   ^[ .............. Escape
                   ^H .............. Back Space
                   ^I .............. Tab
                   ^J .............. Line Feed
                   ^M .............. Carriage Return
To enter a Ctrl-^, hold [Ctrl] and press [^]; you'll see the symbol ^, which represents that sequence on your screen. To enter a delete character (ASCII 127), hold [Ctrl] and press the [Backspace] key; you'll see D on your screen. To enter a null (ASCII 0), hold [Ctrl] and press [2]; you'll see 0 on your screen.

The PROCOMM PLUS translation table provides the means to strip or replace characters you receive from a remote computer. When [Alt]-[W] is pressed, a table of pairs of ASCII values will appear. If the translation table is active, PROCOMM PLUS "filters" the incoming data, replacing the character represented by the ASCII value in the first column in each pair with the character represented by the value in the second column.

To translate a given character, type the ASCII value of the character you wish to replace and press [Enter]. Now type the ASCII value of the replacement character and press [Enter]. To strip a character, enter 0 as the new value.

The translation table is never active during a file transfer.

The following keys perform other translation table functions:

Press ... In order to ...
[F1] Save changes you have made to disk.
[F2] Display the other half of the translation table.
[F3] Activate the translation table. If you made changes with
the table turned off, be sure to save those changes
before activating the table, as PROCOMM PLUS reads the
PCPLUS.XLT file from the disk when this key is pressed.
    [F4] Deactivate the translation table.
    [Esc] Exit the translation table.

For more information, see "Changing the Translation Table" in Chapter 8 of your User Manual.
Clipboard (ALT-=)
PROCOMM PLUS provides a filename "Clipboard" to help automate the selection and transfer of files to your PC from a remote system. Filenames are "cut" from the screen and "pasted" into the Clipboard; later, you can send single filenames, groups of filenames or the entire list to the remote system for processing. The Clipboard is typically used to select files for downloading from a bulletin board file listing; later, when you're prompted by the BBS for the files you wish to download, PROCOMM PLUS can enter each filename in sequence.

When you select Clipboard, PROCOMM PLUS searches the current screen for filenames. The name can be up to eight characters long, followed by a period and an extension of up to three characters - for instance, "clip.txt" and "clip.t" would be valid filenames, while "clip." and "clip.text" would not.

To invoke the Clipboard, press [Alt]-[=]. PROCOMM PLUS freezes the current terminal screen and displays a submenu of commands.

To "cut" filenames from the screen to the Clipboard, press [C]; use the arrow keys to highlight filenames, and press [Enter] to cut the current filename.

When you've finished cutting, press [Esc]. To exit the Clipboard menu, press [Esc] again.

PROCOMM PLUS returns you to Terminal mode, where you can display additional files.

You can also edit the Clipboard, adding or modifying filenames directly. To edit the list from the Clipboard menu, press [E]. The Clipboard will appear, and you can use the standard PROCOMM PLUS editing keys to add, modify or delete filenames.

Once you've completed your Clipboard list, you can send (or "paste") the filename(s) to the remote computer. Before entering the Clipboard menu, make sure the remote system is ready to receive the list of files you're about to send!

The Single Paste command sends the top file to the remote computer followed with a carriage return, and then deletes the filename from the Clipboard, moving all the other filenames up one position. This option is especially useful when downloading a Clipboard list of files with a protocol like XMODEM; as the remote computer prompts you for each file, you can Single Paste a filename from your Clipboard and remove it automatically. To paste a single filename from the Clipboard menu, press [S].

The Tag Paste command sends a number of tagged Clipboard filenames to the remote computer. Each file is separated from the next with a separator character you select in Setup; the default is a carriage return. The last file in the sequence is followed with a carriage return. Tag Paste allows you to select the files to paste, using keys similar to the Dialing Directory; press [Space] to tag a file. Tagged filenames are not deleted after pasting. This method works well with multiple-file protocols like ZMODEM or YMODEM. To paste tagged filenames from the Clipboard menu, press [T].

Finally, the Paste All command sends all Clipboard filenames to the remote computer. As with Tag Paste, each file is separated from the next with a separator character, and the last file in the sequence is followed with a carriage return. The filenames are not deleted after pasting. This method works well with multiple-file protocols like ZMODEM or YMODEM. To paste all filenames from the Clipboard menu, press [P].

For more information on Clipboard, please refer to Chapter 7 of your User Manual.

Use this screen to set the default Terminal mode colors for PROCOMM PLUS. Five terminal attributes are supported: normal, bold, low, reverse and underline. These attributes also support the differing display characteristics of the numerous terminals emulated by PROCOMM PLUS; for example, the low attribute is used for half intensity as well as write- protected fields in TeleVideo and Wyse emulations. Note that not all attributes are available with each emulation.

This Setup screen also allows you to select the colors PROCOMM PLUS will use for the Status line; you can select a normal and a highlighted color.

Press the letter next to the item whose colors you want to change; PROCOMM PLUS displays a color palette containing all possible foreground/background color combinations for this item with a box around the current value. Use the four cursor keys to move the box to the desired combination (you'll notice that the sample Terminal mode screen is updated as you move the cursor). When you've chosen the new value, press [Enter] to select it. PROCOMM PLUS returns to the Window Color Options screen; from here you can select another color or press [Esc] to return to the previous menu.

If you want to change the colors used in Terminal mode to black and white (for example, if you're using a laptop computer with a backlit display), start PROCOMM PLUS using the /b switch. Be sure to save your changes so that PROCOMM PLUS will use black and white for all future sessions!

Under some conditions, the selected terminal colors may be changed under control of the remote system. Many BBS systems use ANSI codes to produce colorful graphic displays, but those codes can also reset your terminal colors. Your selected colors will be restored when the terminal type is reset, or when you exit and return to PROCOMM PLUS.

Host mode transforms your PC into a "bulletin board system" (or BBS), providing a convenient method of allowing other computers to connect with yours. Remote users can transfer files, send messages, converse with you on-line - and even execute DOS commands or shell to DOS (if you allow them).

Host recognizes the following commands (all other keys are treated as if they were sent by the remote user):

Press ... In order to ...
[Esc] Return to Terminal mode (or the script that executed
                   the HOST command).
[F1] Chat with user. The remote user is told that the system
operator is on-line and the local console is placed into
chat mode. Chat is disabled if no one is on-line.
[Ctrl]-[X] Terminate current user and prepare for next user.
[F2] Perform a local log-on. This key is valid only while
Host mode is waiting for a modem connection (the message
"Waiting..." appears on the status line). This feature
is useful for checking the "look and feel" of your
system and for performing Host functions without a
connection. Note that if you've customized your menus
with ANSI graphics and colors, they will NOT be displayed
correctly during a local log-on (Host doesn't use ANSI
                   terminal emulation).
[Alt]-[F4] Shell to DOS (similar to the DOS Gateway Terminal mode
                   command.

Besides the options in the Host Setup facility, make sure you've correctly set these items:

Current If you haven't specified a download directory in Host directory Options, all files in this directory will be available
                   for downloading.
Line/port setup The baud rate should be set to the highest speed
supported by your modem, (unless you have "Connection
Type" set to DIRECT). Also, both computers should be
                   using the same line settings.
Modem setup Your modem should respond correctly to both the
auto-answer and hangup functions. Additionally, if you
have Auto Baud Detect set ON, your modem must
return the connect strings specified in the Modem Result
                   Messages Setup menu.
HCOMMAND.RTE If you've enabled the Setup SHELLBOOT feature, Host must
be able to load this file from either the current
directory or the directory specified by your "PCPLUS="
                   environment variable.

Protocols
PROCOMM PLUS offers you a variety of protocols for transferring files from other computers. To see the list of available protocols see list on Seite 4.
Send Files (Pg-Up)
To send a file, begin the transfer procedure on the remote computer. Press [PgUp] to display the list of available file transfer protocols; press the letter or number corresponding to the protocol you wish to use then press [Enter].

PROCOMM PLUS now asks you to name the file you wish to send. If you have the Filename Lookup option turned on, PROCOMM PLUS will search the screen for a valid filename and enter what it finds. To use that filename, simply press [Enter]. To use another filename, or if the lookup feature is disabled, type the name of the file to transfer and press [Enter].

For more information, see Chapter 7 in your User Manual.
Receive Files (Pg-Dn)
To receive a file, begin the transfer procedure on the remote computer and press [PgDn]. PROCOMM PLUS displays a list of available file transfer protocols. The amount of free space on the destination drive is also displayed. Type the letter or number corresponding to the protocol you wish to use and press [Enter].

Depending upon the protocol chosen, PROCOMM PLUS may ask you for the name of the file you wish to receive. If you have the Filename Lookup option turned on, PROCOMM PLUS will search the screen for a valid filename and enter what it finds. To use that filename, simply press [Enter]. To use another filename, or if the lookup feature is disabled, type the name of the file and press [Enter].

If you've begun a ZMODEM download from a remote computer and you've enabled Auto Downloading within the Setup facility, simply remain in Terminal mode. PROCOMM PLUS will automatically receive the file; you do not need to press [PgDn] to initiate the download.

If prompted for the file's name, you may include a path specification. If no path is included, the file will go to either the directory you have specified as the default path for downloaded files in the "Files/Path" section of the Setup Facility, or, if no such entry was made, to the current directory.

PROCOMM PLUS will display a status screen to keep you informed of the progress of the transfer.

For more information, see "Receive Files" in Chapter 7 of your User Manual.

ECHO LOCALLY
Specifies whether PROCOMM PLUS will display on your screen the data being sent to the other computer.
EXPAND BLANK LINES
Specifies whether PROCOMM PLUS will replace blank lines with lines containing a space. This is useful when you're uploading messages on a system where a blank line is used to indicate the end of a message. Selecting YES allows you to include a blank line without the remote system treating it as the end of the message.
EXPAND TABS
Specifies whether PROCOMM PLUS will replace tab characters with eight spaces in files you upload to a remote computer.
CHARACTER PACING
Specifies the delay between sending each character to the other computer (in milliseconds).
LINE PACING
Specifies the delay between sending each line of data to the other computer (in tenths of a second).
PACE CHARACTER
If you specify a pace character, PROCOMM PLUS waits to receive that character from the remote computer before sending the next line. Pace characters are entered with ASCII numeric values.
STRIP 8TH BIT
Determines whether PROCOMM PLUS will strip the 8th (high order) bit in characters being sent or received during ASCII file transfers.
ASCII DOWNLOAD TIMEOUT
Specifies the number of seconds PROCOMM PLUS will wait between received characters during an ASCII download before ending the transfer.
CR TRANSLATION (UPLOAD)
Specifies how PROCOMM PLUS will process carriage returns in files you send to the remote computer.
LF TRANSLATION (UPLOAD)
Specifies how PROCOMM PLUS will process line feeds in files you send to the remote computer.
CR TRANSLATION (DOWNLOAD)
Specifies how PROCOMM PLUS will process carriage returns in files you receive from the remote computer.
LF TRANSLATION (DOWNLOAD)
Specifies how PROCOMM PLUS will process line feeds in files you receive from the remote computer.

TIME AND DATE STAMPING
If ON (the default), the files will bear the original system time and date sent by the remote system. When set to OFF, ZMODEM will use your PC's current date and time as the creation date and time for each file sent.
SEND/RECEIVE CRASH RECOVERY
These parameters toggle the ZMODEM file recovery feature on and off. If you're receiving a file and the transfer is interrupted (for example, loss of carrier due to a power failure), simply reconnect to the remote and begin the ZMODEM transfer again. If Receive Crash Recovery is ON (or NEGOTIATE, and the remote system is set to ON), the transfer will restart at the exact point where the connection was lost.
TRANSMIT METHOD
By default, ZMODEM is a "streaming" protocol - the sending computer continues to transmit data until either the end of the file is reached or the receiver requests the retransmission of data. This is a more efficient method of transferring a file, since the receiver need not acknowledge each block (as in XMODEM or YMODEM). However, if you're transferring files over exceptionally noisy lines, ZMODEM can use a "windowing" transfer method. Window sizes of 2048 bytes (2K WINDOW) and 4096 bytes (4K WINDOW) are supported. ZMODEM automatically switches to streaming or windowing operation when receiving a file, so this option is only important when sending a file.
ERROR DETECTION METHOD
ZMODEM supports both 16-bit and 32-bit CRC error detection. 32-bit CRC is better for users requiring absolute data integrity, and is the default - however, it takes slightly longer for PROCOMM PLUS to confirm the accuracy of the data.
AUTO DOWNLOAD
PROCOMM PLUS supports ZMODEM "auto downloading" in Terminal mode. If this field is set to ON and the remote computer sends a file to you using ZMODEM, PROCOMM PLUS will automatically begin a ZMODEM receive (you need not press [PgDn]). The file is stored in the download directory entered in the Setup (or to the current directory if you haven't specified a download directory). Auto Download works only in Terminal mode. If you perform another function while the remote system is attempting a transfer (like viewing a text file or using PCEDIT), you must return to Terminal mode before Zmodem "times out" on the other end. This is normally about 30 to 60 seconds.

Auto Download is not supported if you're using one of these terminal emulations:

Wyse 50 All Data General emulations All ADDS emulations

For more information on ZMODEM transfers, please refer to Chapter 8 of your User Manual.
Protocol Options - External
This Setup screen allows you to specify up to three external protocols that PROCOMM PLUS can use for file transfers. Separate command lines can be provided for sending and receiving files.

Much like Meta keys, there are three types of external protocols: PROGRAM, ASPECT and HOOK. The most common are PROGRAM protocols; they can be any executable program or batch file. Essentially, PROCOMM PLUS performs a "shell" to DOS to use the protocol, so it must be able to access COMMAND.COM in the current directory or in the directory specified by your COMSPEC environment variable.

ASPECT script files which call external protocols should be compiled beforehand; however, if necessary, PROCOMM PLUS will compile a source protocol script.

"HOOK" protocols shell to external programs specially-written to use the current session and Setup parameters supplied by PROCOMM PLUS. For more information on "HOOKed" external protocols, see the file HOOK.C provided on your distribution diskettes.

Kermit Server Commands
Use Kermit server commands to communicate with a remote Kermit server. For these commands to work properly, the remote Kermit must first be placed in server mode. If the remote Kermit does not support server mode, use [PgUp] and [PgDn] to perform Kermit file transfers.
The following Kermit server commands are supported:
Use ... In order to ...
FINISH To terminate the Kermit session and return you to the
                   system level.
LOGOUT To terminate Kermit and log you off the remote computer.
GET To receive a file from the Kermit server. The filename
must be specified exactly as it appears on the remote
                   system.
SEND To transfer a file to the Kermit server.

PROCOMM PLUS supports eight COM ports (COM1 through COM8). On this screen you can specify the base address and the interrupt line for each COM port.

You normally need not be concerned with these values unless you're installing a COM port from COM3 through COM8. If you are installing one of these COM ports, see the documentation accompanying the hardware to find out how to set the base address and IRQ line for that port.

When you select a COM port to change, PROCOMM PLUS puts the cursor in the base address. After you press [Enter], it moves the cursor to the IRQ line for that port.

The default values for COM1 and COM2 are standard. PROCOMM PLUS' defaults for COM3 and COM4 (3E8/IRQ4,2E8/IRQ3) are somewhat standard, but depending upon the hardware may be reversed as COM3=2E8/IRQ3 and COM4=3E8/IRQ4.

Default values for PS/2 machines are:

         COM1 3F8 IRQ4 COM5 4220 IRQ3
         COM2 2F8 IRQ3 COM6 4228 IRQ3
         COM3 3220 IRQ3 COM7 5220 IRQ3
         COM4 3228 IRQ3 COM8 5228 IRQ3

When you call another computer, your modem indicates the result by sending a "result message" (also called a "status message" or "status code") to your PC. Normally, this message appears on your display; PROCOMM PLUS uses it to determine if a connection was made. If you have Auto Baud set ON, it's also used to adjust the serial port's baud rate.

To ensure that PROCOMM PLUS recognizes the messages sent by your modem, you must tell PROCOMM PLUS what those messages are. By changing the messages in the Modem Result Messages Setup menu, you can change the messages PROCOMM PLUS will recognize. Check your modem's manual for the messages it sends.

300 to 38,400
Specifies the message your modem sends if a connection baud connect
is made at the indicated baud rate.
message The default message for 300 baud is followed by the ^M
control code, which represents a carriage return. The
^M at the end of the message enables PROCOMM PLUS to
distinguish the default connect message for 300 baud
from the default connect messages for other baud rates,
all of which include the 300-baud connect message within
                   them.

No connect
Specifies the messages your modem sends if a connection message 1 to 4
    is not made.

The PROCOMM PLUS Dialing Directory automates most of your dialing tasks. Each directory holds information for 200 of your most often-called systems, and you may have as many directories as will fit on your disk. The information stored for each entry includes:

   * the name and phone number. * the communications parameters (baud rate, parity, data/stop bits, duplex and COM port). * the connection type (DIRECT or MODEM). * the default terminal emulation. * the default Metakey and keyboard files. * your password for this system. * the file transfer protocol. * the "attached" textfile (for the JOT function). * historical data (for example, the time and date of the last call).

You can also link ASPECT files to Directory entries to provide custom Setup configurations or perform log-on sequences automatically.

To move through a directory's entries, use the following keys.

Press ... In order to ... [^] or [v] Highlight the previous or next entry. [PgUp] or Display the previous or next page of entries. [PgDn] [Home] Display the first page of the directory. [End] Display the last page of the directory. [F] or [/] Find an entry or number. Simply enter the search text at the prompt and press [Enter]. Searches are not case- sensitive, and you may search on any part of the entry's name or number. [N] Find the next occurrence of the same text. [G] Go to a specific entry. Enter the entry number at the prompt and press [Enter].

You can dial entries in your Dialing Directory in several ways:

To dial a single system, highlight the system's entry using [] and [] and press [Enter].

To dial a number not in your Dialing Directory press [M], enter the number and press [Enter].

To dial a series of numbers in a "circular list", use [^] and [v] to highlight an entry to be dialed then press [Space] to "mark" it. The entry will be marked by a at the left margin. You may mark up to 15 entries; to dial the marked entries, press [Enter].

You may also dial one or more numbers with or without dialing codes by using the [D] command. Press [D] and at the prompt enter one or more entry numbers separated by spaces. You may include dialing codes with each entry specified.

Other commands are available in the Dialing Directory as well.

Press ... In order to ... [R] Revise the highlighted entry. More help is available on revising by pressing [Alt]-[Z] after selecting the [R] command. [A] Add an entry to this directory. PROCOMM PLUS displays the Revise entry window for the first blank entry in the current directory. Press [Esc] to cancel the Add operation. [E] Erase one or more entries. To erase a single entry, highlight the entry using [] and [] and press [E]. To erase multiple entries, mark the entries as described above and press [E]. Any number of entries may be erased at one time. [J] Jot or review notes for an entry. Use this command to "attach" a textfile to an entry; the textfile can hold notes or reminders concerning that remote system. PROCOMM PLUS automatically calls your editor with the Jot filename provided in the entry. If the entry doesn't have a filename, PROCOMM PLUS prompts you for it. You can use separate files for each directory entry, or you can use the same Jot file for all entries. Jot files can be easily edited outside PROCOMM PLUS with your text editor. [S] Sort your Dialing Directory entries. PROCOMM PLUS can sort on five different fields: the phone number (ascending), the system name (ascending), the date of the last connection (descending), the baud rate (descending) and the total completed calls (descending). [L] Print the current Dialing Directory to your printer or a disk file. [P] Examine or revise dialing codes. More help is available on dialing codes by pressing [Alt]-[Z] after selecting the [P] command. [X] Load a different Dialing Directory. If the directory specified does not exist, a new one will be created. You can have as many directories as will fit on your disk. [T] Toggle the directory display. By pressing [T] you can change the information displayed for each entry. [C] Turn off marks on all the marked entries.

For more information, see Chapter 7 in your User Manual.

Dialing Directory - Revising
Each entry in a Dialing Directory consists of the following information: * the remote system name and phone number. * the communications parameters (baud rate, parity, data/stop bits, duplex and COM port). * the connection type (DIRECT or MODEM). * the default terminal emulation. * the default Meta key and keyboard files. * your password for this system. * the file transfer protocol. * the "attached" textfile (for the JOT function). * historical data (for example, the time and date of the last call).
You can also link ASPECT files to Directory entries to provide custom Setup configurations or perform log-on sequences automatically.

Use this screen to add or alter Dialing Directory entries.

When editing the name, number, Meta key, keyboard, Jot and script file fields, use the following keys:

Press ... In order to ... [<-] or [->] Move the cursor to the right or left. [Ctrl-Bkspace] Erase an entire entry field. [Ctrl]-[PgDn] Jump directly to the "Clear Last Date..." prompt.

When editing the other fields, use [] and [] to highlight the value you wish to use and then press [Enter]. To leave a field unchanged, press [Enter].

After you complete the revisions to an entry, PROCOMM PLUS asks whether you want to CLEAR THE LAST DATE AND TOTAL. PROCOMM PLUS keeps track of the last date you connected to each system and the total number of connections to each system - press [Y] to clear that data or [N] to keep it. You'll then be asked whether you want to ACCEPT THIS ENTRY - enter [N] to make more revisions or [Y] to place the entry into the Dialing Directory. If you accept the entry, PROCOMM PLUS will ask whether to SAVE ENTRY TO DISK - press [Y] to make the entry permanent or [N] to keep the entry only for the current session.
Dialing Codes
PROCOMM PLUS lets you specify up to 10 dialing codes. Each code represents a series of characters to be dialed along with a telephone number when the code is encountered. Dialing codes are used to provide access to some long-distance carriers, to dial through an office PBX or for other situations when your dialing command must contain characters other than just the phone number.

You can use dialing codes by including one or more before, within or after the telephone number in a Dialing Directory entry. Alternately, you can type one or more codes before or after the entry number when you dial by typing the entry number (the Dialing Directory [D] command).

This menu allows you to revise or erase dialing codes. Press ... In order to ... [^] or [v] Highlight the dialing code to be revised to erased. [R] Revise the highlighted dialing code. [E] Erase the highlighted dialing code. [Esc] Exit the dialing code menu.

For more information, see "Adding or Changing a Dialing Code" in Chapter 6 of your User Manual.

PRINT DEVICE
Specifies the DOS device that PROCOMM PLUS will use for all print operations. Normally, this value is PRN. No ending colon is required.
CD HIGH AT EXIT
Determines the action PROCOMM PLUS takes if you exit the program while Carrier Detect is still high. PROCOMM PLUS can IGNORE the CD signal, ASK whether you want to hang up or HANGUP without prompting.
ENHANCED KB SPEEDUP
Controls whether PROCOMM PLUS will "speed up" keyboard and cursor movement if you're using an enhanced keyboard.
REMOTE COMMANDS
Determines whether PROCOMM PLUS will accept and execute script commands sent by the remote system.
TRANSLATE TABLE
Specifies whether or not PROCOMM PLUS uses the translation table to translate (or strip) characters being received from the other computer.
PAUSE CHARACTER
Specifies the character representing a half-second pause in outgoing strings (including Meta keys, ASPECT files and the modem Initialization command).
TRANSMIT PACING
Specifies the delay between sending each character in a string (including commands sent to the modem, Meta keys and terminal control sequences).
CALL LOGGING
Determines whether PROCOMM PLUS will keep a log of all completed calls. If set ON, PROCOMM PLUS keeps the log data in a file called PCPLUS.FON.
FILENAME LOOKUP
Specifies whether PROCOMM PLUS will look for a valid filename on the screen when you press [PgDn] or [PgUp] to begin a file transfer. Filename lookup is not used if you're receiving a file with a protocol that sends the filename (for instance, YMODEM or ZMODEM).
PULLDOWN MENUS
Controls whether the Pulldown Menu line is active.
MENU LINE KEY
Specifies the key that will activate the Pulldown Menu line.
DROP DTR TO HANGUP
Specifies whether PROCOMM PLUS will drop the DTR line to hang up a call. Dropping DTR is usually much faster than sending the Hangup string.
FILE TRANSFER KEY
Determines whether PROCOMM PLUS will recognize the regular ([PgUp] and [PgDn]) or alternate transfer keystrokes ([Ctrl]-[PgUp] and [Ctrl]-[PgDn]) to begin a file transfer.
CHAT MODE
Controls the way text is sent to the remote while you're in Chat mode. If set to CHAR, PROCOMM PLUS sends each character immediately; if set to BLOCK, PROCOMM PLUS waits for you to press [Enter] before sending text. In BLOCK mode, you can edit each line of text with the [Backspace] key before you press [Enter]. This field doesn't affect the Host mode Chat function, which always uses CHAR mode.
MOUSE X SENSITIVITY
Specifies the sensitivity of the mouse's horizontal (left-to-right) movement. The lower the number, the higher the effective sensitivity. Values range from 1 to 999; the default sensitivity of 30 should accommodate most mice.
MOUSE Y SENSITIVITY
Specifies the sensitivity of the mouse's vertical (up-and-down) movement. The lower the number, the higher the effective sensitivity. Values range from 1 to 999; the default sensitivity of 28 should accommodate most mice.
CLIPBOARD SEPARATOR
Determines the character PROCOMM PLUS sends between each filename when you use the Paste All and Tag Paste Clipboard commands. The character value is in decimal format and can range from 1 to 127. Common values are a carriage return (decimal 13) and a space (decimal 32).

For more information, see Chapter 8 in your User Manual.
Directory-Options
Change Directory (ALT-F7)
PROCOMM PLUS allows you to change your current local drive and directory. The current directory is shown in the top border of the window. To change it, type the name of the new drive and/or directory and press [Enter]. Press [Esc] to return to Terminal mode without making any changes.

For more information, see "Change Directory" in Chapter 7 of your User Manual.

File Directory (ALT-F)
The PROCOMM PLUS File Directory command lets you list the files in any directory or disk.

At the prompt, enter any valid file specification. You may include a drive and path designator, as well as the DOS wildcard characters * and ?. If you press [Enter] without typing in a file specification, PROCOMM PLUS lists all the files in the current directory.
If "MORE" appears at the bottom of the display, press any key to see additional files. If it doesn't, pressing any key will return you to Terminal mode.
For more information, see "File Directory" in Chapter 7 of your User Manual.

PROCOMM PLUS allows you to select the colors to use within the Menu line, Command menu and function windows.

Press the letter next to the item whose colors you want to change; PROCOMM PLUS displays a color palette containing all possible foreground/background color combinations for this item and a "box" cursor indicating the current value. Use the cursor keys to move the box to the desired combination - you'll notice that the sample Terminal mode screen is updated as you move the cursor. When you've chosen the new value, press [Enter] to select it. PROCOMM PLUS returns to the Window Color Options screen; from here you can select another color or press [Esc] to return to the previous menu.

If you want to change the colors of all windows to black and white, start PROCOMM PLUS using the /b switch. Be sure to save your changes so that the windows will be displayed in black and white for all future PROCOMM PLUS sessions! For more information, see "Color Options" in Chapter 8 of your User Manual.

EXPLODING WINDOWS
Determines whether PROCOMM PLUS will open windows by "exploding" them from the center outward.
SOUND EFFECTS
Controls whether PROCOMM PLUS will generate sounds when it opens or closes windows. This option doesn't affect the ALARM SOUND.
ALARM SOUND
Determines whether PROCOMM PLUS will sound an alarm with your PC's speaker to signal the end of file transfers, connections and other events.
ALARM TIME
Specifies how long PROCOMM PLUS will sound the alarm.
SNOW REMOVAL
Specifies whether PROCOMM PLUS will attempt to eliminate "snow" on CGA monitors.
STATUS LINE
Determines whether the Terminal mode Status line will be ON or OFF when you first start PROCOMM PLUS. You can also toggle the Status line ON and OFF with the Toggle Status command.
CURSOR TYPE
Controls whether PROCOMM PLUS will use a square block or an underscore character as a cursor.
REDISPLAY BUFFER
Specifies the amount of buffer memory PROCOMM PLUS will reserve for the Redisplay command at startup. Values range from 1 to 63 kilobytes.
VIDEO STARTUP MODE
Specifies the video mode PROCOMM PLUS will use when you first start the program. DOS MODE uses the same display mode DOS was using at startup. 25 X 80 provides the standard 25 row by 80 column display. EXTRA X 80 displays extra lines by 80 columns on EGA/VGA monitors. USER MODE places "super" EGA and VGA-equipped PCs into the display mode specified by the User Video Mode field. EXTRA X USER displays EGA/VGA extra lines by the number of columns corresponding to your User Video Mode field.
VGA EXTRA LINE COUNT
Determines how many extra lines PROCOMM PLUS will display in Terminal mode on PCs equipped with EGA/VGA adaptors and monitors. Possible values are 28, 43 and 50 lines. For more information, see the Video Startup Mode option above and the [Ctrl]-[-] Terminal mode command.
USER VIDEO MODE
PROCOMM PLUS uses this value to set "super" EGA/VGA graphic cards to specific text modes when you select USER MODE display (see the Video Startup Mode option above). Valid values range 0 to 127, where 0 turns off the USER MODE feature. This is an option for advanced users; it's recommended that you use PCINSTAL to determine the available and safe values for your particular graphic adaptor. Your graphic adaptor manual can also provide information on this value.
Script-Files
Script File Selection
To execute an ASPECT script file, type the name of the script file (without the extension) and press [Enter]. If you're unsure of the name, pressing [Enter] by itself will open a window displaying the .ASX files in the current directory. If no compiled files exist in the current directory, PROCOMM PLUS will display files in the directory pointed to by the "PCPLUS=" environment variable.

To select a file from the window, use the [v] and [^] keys to position the highlight on the desired file and press [Enter]. Use [PgUp] and [PgDn] to page through the display.

The name of the script file appears at the left of the Status line while it is being executed. To cancel execution of a script file, press [Esc] and answer 'Y' to the prompt.

For more information, see Chapter 7 in your User Manual.

OPERATORS:
ASPECT supports a set of operators which can be combined with numeric values to form complex mathematical expressions. Most operators have an equivalent command form (the exceptions are the parens, compound assignment operators and comma operator). For further details, see the appendix on ASPECT operators in your ASPECT Script Language Reference Manual.

(  )  !  -  ~  ++  --  *  /  %  +  -  <<  >>  <=  >=  <  >  ==  !=  &  ^  | &&  ||  =  *=  /=  %=  +=  -=  <<=  >>=  &=  ^=  |=  ,
PREDEFINED GLOBAL VARIABLES:
These variables are predefined in the ASPECT language and are ready for use. Their values are initialized to 0 or null when a script is initially executed; however, the EXECUTE command can use these variables to pass information to another "chained" script (unlike user-defined variables, they retain their value across scripts).

Integers: N0, N1, N2, N3, N4, N5, N6, N7, N8 and N9. Strings : S0, S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7, S8 and S9.
SYSTEM VARIABLES:
These are read-only variables; their values can only be assigned by internal ASPECT and PROCOMM PLUS operations. They may be used wherever a value of the same data type is required. System variables cannot be used where a variable is explicitly required. System variables with a leading "$D_" refer to data obtained from the Dialing Directory, while those with a leading "$H_" refer to Host mode.
Integers: $COL, $D_DATABIT, $D_DUPLEX, $D_ENTRY, $D_MODE, $D_PARITY, $D_PORT, $D_PROTO, $D_STOPBIT, $D_TERM, $D_TOTAL, $H_LEVEL, $ROW, $SCRNCOLS, $SCRNROWS, $TERMBOLD, $TERMDIM, $TERMNORM, $TERMREV, $TERMULINE, COMDATA, CONNECTED, FAILURE, FOREVER, FOUND, FROMDDIR, HITKEY, MONO, SUCCESS and WAITFOR.
Longs : $D_BAUD, $H_BAUD
Strings : $D_LDATE, $D_KBDFILE, $D_MACFILE, $D_NAME, $D_NOTE, $D_PHONE, $D_PWORD, $D_SCRIPT, $DATE, $FATTR, $FDATE, $FEXT, $FILENAME, $FNAME, $FSIZE, $FTIME, $H_ELAPSED, $H_NAME, $H_OFFLINE, $H_ONLINE, $NULL and $TIME.
PROCEDURE, VARIABLE, MACRO AND LABEL NAMES:
Procedures, labels and variables are named elements in ASPECT. With the exception of local and parameter variables, all names must be unique. The compiler will only consider the first ten characters in a name; therefore, these first ten characters form the unique portion of a name. All command words (including system variables and command parameters) are reserved for ASPECT - they cannot be used as unique names.

A valid name consists of an alphabetic character (A-Z or a-z) or underscore (_) followed by zero or more alphabetic, underscore, or numeric (0-9) characters.
NOTATIONAL CONVENTIONS:
Square brackets ([]) indicate that the enclosed items can be optionally provided with the command. A vertical bar (|) separates items in a list from which one item only must be selected. Braces ({}) are used to surround an item list when the first or last vertical bar separates items composed of more than one token. A series of three horizontal dots indicates that the previous command parameter may be repeated more than once on the command line.

The syntax of condition is:

condition := [NOT | ZERO] {expression | MATH_COMMAND | EOF index |              NULL strvar}

where MATH_COMMAND is any one of: ADD, AND, ANDL, COMP, DEC, DIV, EQ, GE, GT, INC, INIT, LE, LT, MOD, MUL, NEG, NEQ, NOT, OR, ORL, SHL, SHR, SUB, XOR, ZERO and its required parameters, excluding the result variable (for INC, DEC and INIT, all parameters are required in the condition).

A condition consists of a specific command word and its parameters or a numeric expression, optionally preceded by a NOT or ZERO command word; for example, the statements:

          "IF NOT LE N0 N1" and "IF !(N0 <= N1)"

are functionally equivalent. If the command or expression evaluates to a non-zero value, then the condition was satisfied (TRUE). A zero value indicates that the resulting conditional test was FALSE. See the appropriate command word definition or numeric expression description for further details.

The following system variables are often used in a condition: COMDATA, CONNECTED, FAILURE, FOREVER, FOUND, HITKEY, FROMDDIR, MONO, SUCCESS and WAITFOR. For further information, see the descriptions for these variables in the ASPECT Script Language Reference Manual.

ASPECT Keycode Reference
This topic lists the keyboard codes (keycodes) returned by the ASPECT script language commands KEYGET, HITKEY and KEY2ASCII, and accepted by the TERMKEY command (for keycode values greater than 255).

Many keycodes are returned only by the 101/102-key "enhanced" keyboards. For these keyboards, the table assumes that the BIOS extended keyboard function returns the keycode value (Interrupt 16 hex, Services 0, 1 and 2). PROCOMM PLUS will check for an enhanced keyboard, and automatically use the extended BIOS function calls.

The keycodes returned by the white cursor control keys on the numeric keypad assume that NumLock is off. When NumLock is on, refer to the numeric keypad keycodes rather than the corresponding key in the alphanumeric typing area. The codes generated by holding down the Alt key and pressing from one to three keys on the numeric keypad are not listed, since their value is the same as the number sequence typed while holding down the Alt key.

All keycode values listed here are represented as hexadecimal numbers. To use them in an ASPECT file, place the characters 0x in front of the value; for example, the value for [Esc] would be 0x1B. Decimal values for the standard alphabetic, numeric, and punctuation keys can be found with the ASCII chart provided in your User Manual.

Two dashes (--) indicate that no keycode is generated for the key sequence, while square brackets ([]) surround keycodes generated only by an extended keyboard. Use the Keycode Lookup Table when you have a keycode value but don't know what key it represents.
MISCELLANEOUS SPECIAL KEYS:
The Center Key (keypad 5) is defined only when NumLock is off. Key 45 refers to the extra key on the 102-key keyboard between the left Shift key and the Z key.

Record Mode
PROCOMM PLUS uses Record mode to "learn" a remote computer's prompts and your responses (such as a log-on procedure) to create an ASPECT script you can use to automate that procedure.

Press [Alt]-[R] before beginning the task (such as dialing a BBS) and then specify a filename for the script file you want to create. The message "RECORDING" appears on the left side of the Status line to remind you that PROCOMM PLUS is recording the remote computer's prompts and your responses.

When the procedure you wish to record is over, press [Alt]-[R] again. You may want to "fine tune" the script file with your editor.

For more information, see the "Record Mode" section of Chapter 7 in your User Manual.
PCEDIT (ALT-A)
PCEDIT is a powerful ASCII text editor with both ASPECT and word processing functions. It handles lines up to 120 characters long, with a maximum of 5000 lines per file.

Multiple files can be edited at once, and two files can be viewed simulataneously. Use Alt-+ (or Alt-=) and Alt-- to traverse the list of files being edited. Information can easily be copied or moved between files.

Two separate input modes are available: one tailored for writing ASPECT files, and one for word processing tasks. When entering text, the full ASCII character range is supported except for the following values, which have special interpretations: 0 (null), 8 (backspace), 9 (tab), 10 (linefeed), 13 (carriage return), 27 (escape) and 255.

The command line syntax for PCEDIT is:

                   PCEDIT [options] filespec(s)

The option switches are optional. Filespecs may include the "*" and "?" wildcards, and multiple filespecs can be specified. Spaces must be used to separate each option and/or filespec. PCEDIT supports the following command line option switches:

/B Force use of black & white (monochrome)
/Ln Go directly to line number n
                   /N Suppress logo screen
/U Use upper case characters in ASPECT macros
/V Start in split screen mode

The following keystrokes are available within PCEDIT:

EDITOR INPUT MODE
Selects the default input mode for PCEDIT, which affects the cursor's column placement when adding new lines or when [Enter] is pressed.

1 ASPECT: cursor adjusted to first character on the line or to proper indent level based on contents of previous non-blank line.

2 WP (WORD PROCESSING): cursor adjusted to the left-margin column value (if the next line is blank) or to the first character (if the next line already contains text.
EXPAND TABS
Specifies whether to automatically expand tab characters with spaces.
TAB STOP SPACING
Determines the default tab stops PCEDIT uses when the [Tab] key is pressed. Its value can range from 0 to 119.
OMIT EOF MARK
Controls whether PCEDIT will add or omit the end-of-file character (Ctrl-Z) when saving a file to disk.
ASPECT MODE INDENTATION
Specifies the number of spaces to indent in the ASPECT input mode. When a new line is added, the cursor will be adjusted based on the contents of the previous non-blank line. Its value can range from 0 to 119.
WP MODE INDENTATION
This item specifies the indentation used for a new paragraph in WP mode. Its value can range from 0 to 119.
USE WORDWRAP
Controls whether PCEDIT will use automatic wordwrap in WP mode. If this field is set to YES, a word reaching the right margin is repositioned at the left margin of the next line.
RIGHT JUSTIFY
Specifies whether PCEDIT will add additional spaces between words to create an even right margin. RIGHT JUSTIFY is only used in WP mode.
LEFT MARGIN
This item specifies the left margin. Values range from 1 to 120.
RIGHT MARGIN
This item specifies the right margin; values range from 1 to 120. The right margin should be at least as long as the left margin value.
PCEDIT Color Options
This Setup screen allows you to select the colors PROCOMM PLUS will use for each element of the PCEDIT editor screen.

Press the letter next to the item whose colors you want to change; PROCOMM PLUS displays a color palette containing all possible foreground/background color combinations for this item and a "box" cursor indicating the current value. Use the four cursor keys to move the box to the desired combination (you'll notice that the sample PCEDIT screen is updated as you move the cursor). When you've chosen the new value, press [Enter] to select it. PROCOMM PLUS returns to the Window Color Options screen; from here you can select another color or press [Esc] to return to the previous menu.

If you want to change all colors within PCEDIT to black and white, start PROCOMM PLUS (or PCEDIT) using the /b switch. Be sure to save your changes so that PCEDIT will use black and white for all future editing!
View a File (ALT-V)
Use the Terminal mode View command to examine a text file without leaving PROCOMM PLUS. You may use either the built-in view utility or one of your own choosing.

To use an external utility, specify the name of the program to use on the Files/Path Options Setup menu. When you press [Alt]-[V], you'll be prompted for the parameters (such as the filename) to pass to the external program.

To use the built-in view utility, specify the name of the file you wish to read at the prompt. Then use the following keys to move around the file:

Press ... In order to ...
[PgDn] Move to the next page.
[PgUp] Move to the preceding page.
[Home] Move to the beginning of the file.
    [Esc] Exit the view utility.

For more information, see "View a File" in Chapter 7 of your User Manual.
