Explanation of names of zipped files for 1993 Issue 7 and later:

DSNymA = Developer Support News 199y issue m ASCII (plain-text)
DSNymI = Developer Support News 199y issue m .INF (use OS/2 VIEW)
DSNymP = Developer Support News 199y issue m .PS (PostScript)

where y = last digit of year (3, 4, ...)
      m = issue represented as alpha (1=A, ..., 7=G, 8=H, ...)

For example, DSN3GI is 1993 issue 7 (=G), the 15 October issue, in .INF
format (after being unzipped).

    | IBM Announces Integrated Solution Developer Organization | sdoann
    +----------------------------------------------------------+

IBM announces the creation of its worldwide Solution Developer
Operations unit. The new organization integrates solution developer
recruiting, technical support, and business relationship management for
key IBM technologies into a single organization. It reports to John W.
Thompson, assistant group executive, marketing.

"Today customers are choosing a business solution first, and then
selecting hardware and operating-system platforms based upon that
decision. At the same time, new technologies such as object-oriented
programming and advanced network computing are dramatically changing the
information technology marketplace. These changes create enormous
opportunities for those companies that can move fast, are easy to do
business with, and can develop strong, mutually beneficial business
relationships with the solution developer community," said Mr. Thompson.

Initially, solution developer support for Personal Software Products,
RS/6000, PowerPersonal, and IBM US Software Vendor Operations are being
moved to the new organization.

Questions and Answers
---------------------

Q1. Why is IBM consolidating its solution developer support?

A1. The new organization will simplify doing business with IBM for
solution developers by providing a single point of contact for all
business relationships. In addition, it will also provide direct
access to new IBM technologies, consistent terms and conditions
across platforms, and a consistent technical support strategy. In
short, the new organization is focused on making the mutual
partnership beneficial to IBM and developers across multiple IBM
    platforms.

Q2. Will solution developers see any immediate change in their
    relationships with IBM?

A2. No. Continuing the excellent solution developer relationships we
have built over the years and execution of current commitments is
the first priority of this new organization. This announcement is
the beginning of the re-engineering of our solution developer
operations. While we expect to begin making the necessary changes to
improve our relationships and simplify doing business with IBM
shortly, solution developers will be given ample notice of any
    changes.

Q3. How does IBM define solution developer? Does it include systems
    integrators?

A3. The solution provider community is broken into several categories:

    - Component developers
    - Platform providers
    - Tool providers
    - Application developers
    - Distributors
    - Integrators
    - Consultants

Initially, the new Solution Developer Operations organization will
focus on the first four categories -- component developers,
platform providers, tool providers, and application developers.

Q4. What will happen to Software Vendor Operations in the new
    organization?

A4. Software Vendor Operations was established to support selected
technologies. This new organization will span multiple platforms,
and will focus on providing services to the solution developer
    community as a whole.

Q5. How will the new group interact with IBM's newly formed industry
    groups?

A5. The new organization will support the industry units and work with
    industry vertical solution developers.

Q6. Is this a move to reduce the amount of support IBM provides to
    software developers?

A6. On the contrary, this new organization will increase the amount of
support to developers by reducing the complexity of doing business
    with IBM.

Q7. Will IBM's geographic marketing units and worldwide industry
organizations continue their marketing relationships with solution
    developers?

A7. Yes. The geographic marketing and services units, including the
industry-specific organizations, will continue to maintain strong
marketing relationships with key solution developers, and will
continue to enter into joint marketing arrangements as necessary.
The new organization will coordinate all business relationships with
developers, and will provide developers with early access to new IBM
    technologies.

Q8. What role does the Solution Developer Operations organization play?

A8. The Solution Developer Operations organization is responsible for
coordinating the global delivery of support to solution developers.
It will be responsible for gaining developer commitments to IBM
technologies and platforms, and for hosting developer events such as
technical interchanges. It is the single point of entry to IBM's
technical support structure, and will deliver technical expertise to
    developers.

Program Services
----------------

Developer support is available to all customers licensing The IBM
Developer Connection Device-Driver Kit for OS/2.

Developer support (technical assistance) encompasses DDK usage and many
aspects of device-driver development in general. Developers are expected
to have device-driver development experience or be willing to invest the
time necessary to work through most of their own questions and problems.
Developer support is not intended to provide an education service. It is
intended, however, to answer specific questions after the device-driver
developer has made a reasonable effort to obtain an answer using
available information.

Technical support for device-driver development is provided by the IBM
Driver Development Support Center (DDSC) via a bulletin-board system
(BBS) known as the DUDE. Developers are encouraged to use the DDSC to
obtain support by submitting their own questions and reviewing the
question-and-answer history database, which can be easily downloaded for
review offline.

Developers interested in using the DDSC should call 1-407-982-3217 via
modem to register and to access the support system. To obtain a brief
message of the services available, developers can call 1-407-982-4239.

Technical assistance for The Developer Connection for OS/2 is provided
by submitting questions on an electronic forum and receiving responses
directly from IBM developers. Access to the OS2DF2 forum on CompuServe
will be available to all Developer Connection for OS/2 members until
membership expiration (one-year duration).

The DEVCON CFORUM is on the OS/2 BBS under TalkLink, which is a feature
under the IBMLink Commercial Services. Customers can call
1-800-547-1283.

Internet users may address their questions or comments to
devcon@vnet.ibm.com.

Support for a specific release of The IBM Developer Connection Device
Driver Kit for OS/2 will be available until 30 days after the release of
the subsequent CD-ROM. General device-driver support will be available
until discontinued by IBM upon three months' written notification on the
DDSC System.

Additional support is available depending on the licensee's
participation in certain IBM programs, such as the Worldwide Developer
Assistance Program.

A developer's discount will be made available to developers of
commercially available products (called "Commercial Developers") and
developers of internally used products ("Internal Developers"). The term
"Developers" represents both Commercial and Internal Developers.

Developers who are already qualified under the IBM Power Series
Developer's Toolbox Program or the RISC System/6000 Developer's Program
are already eligible to receive the developer's discount. Developers who
are not qualified, but are interested in qualifying, should call
1-800-627-8363, extension 25, or fax a request to 1-404-835-9444, to

Qualifying Developers will be placed on the approved developer list,
making the Developer eligible to receive the developer's discount when
he/she contacts 1-800-6DEVCON (1-800-633-8266) to order the IBM
Developer Connection for AIX. Annually, the Developer will be notified
by IBM to seek re-qualification in order to continue participation in
the program for the next twelve-month period. IBM will communicate the
results of that re-qualification effort to the Developer.

         | IBM SOMobjects Developer Toolkit and Workgroup | toolsom
         | Enabler Version 2.1 for OS/2, AIX, and Windows |
         +------------------------------------------------+

SOMobjects Developer Toolkit Version 2.1 for OS/2, AIX, and Windows is
an object-oriented programming development product that makes it
possible for programmers to use System Object Model (SOM) technology to
create object-oriented class libraries that can be shared by programmers
using different programming languages.

Objects/classes can be created in one programming language and accessed
from a different programming language. Code can be reused to extend
beyond single language boundaries, making the benefits of
object-oriented programming (OOP) much more open and expansive. The
SOMobjects Toolkit includes language bindings for use with C and C++
programming languages, and added to Version 2.1 is Direct-to-SOM (DTS)
Compiler support for C++ DTS compilers from IBM and MetaWare.

The SOMobjects Developer Toolkit is fully compliant with the Common
Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) specification of the Object
Management Group (OMG). With the SOMobjects Workgroup Enabler product,
the product set also provides distributed object capability across
processes or address spaces in a single workstation, and across multiple
workgroup nodes in a workgroup LAN configuration. The Workgroup Enabler
product enables the execution of SOM-based applications with the
described distributed capabilities. The SOMobjects Developer Toolkit
Version 2.1 includes the workstation enabler (previously sold
separately). The purchaser of the toolkit is given the "extended right
to copy" the workstation enabler code, as needed, and the right to
include it in an application at no charge.

In addition to the DTS Compiler support, Version 2.1 of the SOMobjects
products adds performance and usability improvements to the Distributed
SOM code and TCP/IP support for Windows. Simplified pricing, packaging,
and support for online publications complete the Version 2.1
enhancements.

With the announcements of SOMobjects for MVS and SOMobjects for OS/400,
MVS and AS/400 become significant players in the end-to-end platform
strategy for object-oriented programming.

Planned Availability Dates
--------------------------

o 30 November 1994 (English)
o 31 March 1995 (Japanese)

Highlights
----------

SOMobjects Developer Toolkit:

o Expands object technology to a fully open, fully distributed,
   heterogeneous, multi-platform environment

o Creates objects/class libraries that can be accessed by different
   programming languages

o Allows objects to be modified without recompiling the application

o  Includes Direct-to-SOM C++ compiler support

o Complies with CORBA specifications

o Provides release-to-release upward binary compatibility

SOMobjects Workgroup Enabler:

o Provides distributed LAN support for SOMobjects

Description
-----------

SOM is object-enabling technology that provides functions to overcome
industry-perceived obstacles to the use of object class libraries.

SOM-based objects:

o Can be distributed and subclassed in binary form. Class library
developers will no longer need to supply source code to allow users
   to subclass their objects.

o Can be used, including full subclassing, across languages. It should
be possible with SOMobjects technology to build an object using one
language, subclass the language using another language, and use that
class to build an application in yet a third language. Users of class
libraries want to modify and build applications from these classes in
their preferred language -- not necessarily the one that the class
   was originally written in.

o Provide for the subsequent updating (fixes or enhancements) of these
components without having to recompile existing clients that use them
(upward binary compatibility). This is a key requirement, because
applications that depend on system libraries cannot be rebuilt each
time a change is made to a component in the library.

In addition, SOM possesses a number of advanced object mechanisms,
including support for metaclasses, three types of method dispatch with
both static and dynamic method resolution, and support for both static
and dynamic type-checking.

This new release of SOMobjects Developer Toolkit for OS/2, AIX, and
Windows provides improved performance, usability, and support for
Direct-to-SOM C++ compilers from IBM and Metaware. SOMobjects for MVS
uses the same basic SOM technology as the SOMobjects Developer Toolkit.
By providing support for the SOM architecture on MVS, customers can take
advantage of an end-to-end capability.

SOM applications are IDL-compatible with SOMobjects for MVS. The IDL
code can then be shipped to MVS for compilation and execution. This
provides a level of portability for SOM applications.

Open Enterprise: CORBA from OMG -- Fully Compliant

Product Positioning
-------------------

The SOMobjects Developer Toolkit provides an open, standards-compliant,
object-oriented developer environment on the OS/2, AIX, and Windows
platforms. The product provides distributed, language-neutral
capabilities for defining and manipulating objects and class libraries.
It provides the industry with the long-needed technology for breaking
the language barriers that have confined object-oriented programming
development environments to language-exclusive islands. SOM-based
objects can be truly open and shared, in any application language, and
distributed across heterogeneous networks and IBM operating system
platforms.

This product is enabled for national-language translation (separate
files) and for the double-byte character set (DBCS). In addition to
English, this version of the product will also be available in Japanese.

Documentation
-------------

Documentation relevant to the SOMobjects products is delivered in
English in displayable softcopy form on CD-ROM along with the software.
PostScript files that represent the documentation are included on CD-ROM
and on diskettes (when ordered as "alternate media"). This enables
customers to print whatever documentation they need on their PostScript
printers.

Technical Guidelines for Use of Workstation Enablers
----------------------------------------------------

With the announcement of SOM 2.1, purchasers of the SOM 2.1 Toolkit can
take the workstation enablers from the toolkit, replicate that binary
code as often as needed, and include those enablers with their
applications -- at no charge. There are guidelines, however, that apply
to:

o Coding. The application vendor may not externalize any IBM SOM
Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Further, all applications
that include SOM 2.1 code must use the IBM-supplied "mini-install"
package for the installation of that code. This package comes with
the toolkit and ensures proper installation.

o Service. Application vendors are responsible for service and support
of their customers. IBM will provide support to the application
vendors for problems with IBM code using standard IBM support
   channels and tools.

o Publications. Application vendors are not permitted to copy or
distribute any IBM SOM 2.1 publication or documentation unless they
are explicitly granted permission in the documentation.

By following these simple guidelines, application vendors can now make
maximum use of the IBM SOM 2.1 Toolkit and pass along added value to
their customers.

Compatibility
-------------

The objects and applications developed using the SOM functions included
in the SOMobjects Developer Toolkits Version 2.1 for OS/2, AIX, and
Windows will be upwardly compatible with the SOMobjects Developer
Toolkits Version 2.0 and the SOMobjects Workstation Enablers (Runtimes)
Version 2.0 for OS/2, AIX, and Windows. For example, applications
developed using the SOM Toolkits Version 2.0 will run on subsequent
versions of the SOM enablers. Downward compatibility is not supported;
applications developed with the SOMobjects Version 2.1 programs will not
necessarily run with the earlier versions of the enabler programs.

Class libraries and applications developed with the 2.0 or 2.1 versions
of SOM can coexist with those developed using the SOMobjects Version 1.0
product. Class libraries and applications developed with a prior version
of SOM can be migrated to a newer version of the operating platform with
a subsequent version of the SOM enablers.

           +------------------------------------------------+

If you haven't completed your "Ready! for OS/2" or "Ready! for IBM LAN"
certification for your software product, now is the time to do it. IBM
is having a drawing for two ThinkPad computers to be awarded to
certified members of both programs. You must be certified by 31 December
1994 to be eligible for the drawing.

Two ThinkPads will be given away, one for each certification program.
The ThinkPads are both Model 360c, 486SX, 33 MHz, with 4 MB of RAM and
170 MB hard-disk drives. They come with AC/DC adapters and rechargeable
battery packs.

               | The IBM Product Certification Program | certprod
               +---------------------------------------+

(Note: Although this item is marketing-oriented, it tells developers
about the IBM Product Certification Programs and how to obtain more
information.)

Introducing three sure ways to relieve the pain, tension, and heartburn
of buying hardware and software.

Suffering from Product Integration Anxiety?
-------------------------------------------

If you're suffering from the discomfort of product incompatibility, we
have just what the doctor ordered. It's called the IBM Product
Certification Program. And it can make integrating products into your
business a lot easier to swallow.

Selecting from an overwhelming supply of products can make your head
spin. You don't want a generic solution. In today's world of
heterogeneous environments, IBM's Product Certification Program can help
you choose products to integrate into your business without the
headaches you usually expect from installing new software and hardware.

Look for an IBM Certification Mark
----------------------------------

When you see an IBM certification mark on a product, you know it's going
to provide compatibility with IBM OS/2, LAN Server, or LAN Systems
products. That means you can get your systems up and running in no time
-- with minimum time lost to negative reactions and other system
"hiccups".

Hundreds Already Treated
------------------------

With hundreds of products already certified, and more joining every day,
there's a certified solution for virtually every business need. This
outstanding quantity illustrates a diversified, impressive selection of
IBM's certified product selections. And that's nothing to sneeze at.

Three Popular Flavors
---------------------

The IBM Product Certification Program comes in three popular flavors:

o Ready! for IBM LAN. This certification signifies that a developer has
followed IBM's prescription for self-testing his/her product together
with IBM LAN Server, and has found them to be compatible.

o Ready! for OS/2. Like Ready! for IBM LAN, this certification means
that a developer has used IBM guidelines for self-testing his/her
product together with the OS/2 32-bit operating system, and has found
   them to be compatible.

o Tested and Approved for IBM LAN Systems. If you need to know that the
software and hardware you buy can be depended on in the most robust
implementations, IBM has the remedy. A product that has been "Tested
and Approved for IBM LAN Systems" has been subjected to rigorous
testing in IBM's own integration test lab. These tests combine
hardware and software from a number of different vendors,
demonstrating compatibility, interoperability, and coexistence with
   real-world heterogeneous networks.

Get an Expert Referral
----------------------

Reports of the Tested and Approved for IBM LAN Systems tests and/or
lists of the Ready!-certified products are published so you can check
them out before you buy. They're available through Ziff Communications'
Support on Site, Computer Reseller News MAX, CompuServe, IBM LAN Server
System Builder, the IBM National Solutions Center, the OS/2 Bulletin
Board on IBM Talklink, and in IBM's "Sources and Solutions" catalog. Or
you can have test summaries faxed to you by calling 1-800-IBM-4FAX.

How Do You Spell Relief?
------------------------

Start taking the pain out of integration right away. If your favorite
product isn't already certified, ask the vendor to call IBM about
certification. For information about IBM Ready! certification, call
1-800-285-2936. For information about IBM Tested and Approved
certification, call 1-800-992-4777. Either phone number may be called
from the United States or Canada.

Look for genuine IBM certification marks when you shop for your next
OS/2 or LAN-based product. Ask for them by name. Remember, when it comes
to product compatibility, relief is spelled IBM Product Certification.

                | Comparison of Performance: | perfcomp
                | OS/2 Warp Beta Versus Windows 95 |
                +----------------------------------+

Microsoft Corporation on 10 October published performance numbers
comparing OS/2 Warp Beta II to a non-public Windows 95. As we
understand, the performance numbers were subsequently removed from many
bulletin boards due to complaints pointing out glaring inaccuracies.
However, the document is still available on the Microsoft Internet
server.

Microsoft Performance Numbers Inaccurate
----------------------------------------

The performance numbers published by Microsoft are inaccurate and
unreliable for the following reasons:

1. The percentage numbers were 100 percent too high; for instance, if
Microsoft meant to say that Windows 95 was 20 percent faster than
OS/2 Warp, the Microsoft document asserts that Windows 95 is 120
percent faster. This error occurred 48 times in the Microsoft
document. Even though numerous readers have been pointing this out
for weeks, Microsoft still has not corrected it.

2. Our tests conclude that the Windows for Workgroups (WfW) and Windows
95 machines must have had a 32-bit Western Digital controllers (or
equivalent) for disk access, which Microsoft's 32-bit VFAT driver
takes advantage of. This configuration is neither the default nor the
   representative configuration in the marketplace.

3. Microsoft used OS/2 Warp Beta II, which was not tuned for 4 MB; only
Warp Beta I and the released product were tuned for 4 MB.

4. OS/2 Warp uses different installation parameters when installing on
4 MB computers. We suspect that Microsoft installed OS/2 Warp on a PC
with greater than 4 MB, and then stripped memory to get down to a 4
   MB configuration.

5. The disk cache size for WfW was configured 4 times larger than the
disk cache size for OS/2 Warp, giving WfW a totally unfair advantage.

Our Test Configuration
----------------------

We ran performance tests comparing OS/2 Warp's performance to Windows
3.1 and Windows for Workgroups. Because Windows 95 is still under a
Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), we were unable to do any performance
testing, but we would be happy do so if Microsoft will agree to provide
us with a copy.

Our performance tests found that, in many cases, OS/2 Warp outperforms
WfW 3.11 and Windows 3.11 in 4 MB of memory. We used the Generally
Available versions of OS/2 Warp, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, and
Windows 3.11. We used default configurations, with the disk cache set to
256 KB for all systems.

All of the tests were run on the following machine:

   Machine: IBM PS/ValuePoint
   Processor: 486DX

User Scenarios
--------------

Several user scenarios designed to measure OS/2 Warp's performance
against Windows 3.1 in a multiple application environment yield better
performance for OS/2 Warp in 4 MB of memory:

o With Lotus 1-2-3 + MS Money + Winclock running concurrently, OS/2
Warp is 7 percent faster than Windows 3.1

o With Lotus 1-2-3 + Quicken + Winclock running concurrently, OS/2 Warp
is 11 percent faster than Windows 3.1

o With Lotus 1-2-3 + Ami Pro + Winclock running concurrently, OS/2 Warp
is 7 percent faster than Windows 3.1

Printing in OS/2 Warp is significantly faster than in Windows 3.1:

o Printing on an HP560C printer using WordPerfect for Windows 3.1 is
approximately 40 percent faster under OS/2 Warp versus under Windows
3.1 in a multitasking environment (multitasking consisted of
downloading a file from CompuServe while printing)

o On an HP560C, printing using WordPerfect for Windows is 30 percent
faster in OS/2 Warp (with no multitasking)

When comparing the products for read and write times, OS/2 Warp is
significantly faster. We tested various record sizes in random and
sequential format. Attached below are some of the results in KiloBytes
per Second (KBS). For all of the tests, we used a cache of 256 KB.

             | New Client/Server Application Development | prgenvis
             | Tools Support Team Environments |
             +-------------------------------------------+

Programmers working in teams can write better applications, faster and
more efficiently, with application development tools announced by
IBM. The new productivity tools provide common resources and services
that make it easier for developers to collaborate on projects, share
and reuse application code, and quickly incorporate code changes.

VisualGen Team Suite is a set of powerful, workstation-based tools for
the rapid development of client/server applications in team
environments. Included in this suite are:

o IBM TeamConnection for OS/2, a new facility that uses object-oriented
technology to manage and store application components that are shared
   during team development;

o IBM DataAtlas for OS/2, a new data dictionary that provides a central
   source for creating and maintaining data definitions;

o A new release of VisualGen, a rapid application development tool for
building client/server applications that run on a variety of
   operating systems;

o New tools to assist in the analysis and design of applications.

"This announcement responds to customers' needs to manage shared
designs, standards and code across the organization," said John
Swainson, vice president, Application Development Solutions, IBM.
"These powerful tools work in concert, allowing programmers to create
enterprise applications that can be executed on a wide range of clients
and servers."

VisualGen Team Suite
--------------------

IBM VisualGen Team Suite delivers an advanced LAN-based programming
environment for developing business-critical transaction processing
applications. It provides a fully integrated visual-programming
solution, which includes a LAN-based library, configuration management
facility, repository and data dictionary.

Using VisualGen Team Suite, programming teams can develop enterprise
client/server applications in less time, with fewer programming errors,
and with high levels of data security and integrity. The suite offers
the productivity advantages of visual programming by allowing developers
to build applications quickly and easily by visually connecting
component parts, or iconic representations of the underlying code.

"The value of the VisualGen Team Suite component approach is that it
conforms to a wide variety of corporate development environments,
leveraging existing skills as well as allowing the choice of the most
appropriate tools to re-engineer legacy applications," said Tony
Picardi, director of Worldwide Software, International Data Corporation
(IDC). "The IBM VisualGen Team Suite object repository has an advantage
over relational repositories as it facilitates more efficient navigation
to structurally rich information."

The product also incorporates a powerful requirements definition tool
that allows systems analysts and application designers to document and
organize their development activities and shared data in the LAN
repository. A new data modeler and database designer help developers
create optimal database designs.

VisualGen Team Suite produces applications that are optimized for use
with database, transaction processing and message queuing environments,
and provides broad support for the DATABASE 2 (DB2) family of database
products, Customer Information Control System (CICS), Information
Management System (IMS), and the Message Queuing Series (MQSeries).

IBM TeamConnection for OS/2
---------------------------

IBM TeamConnection for OS/2 is both a software configuration management
facility and a robust LAN-based object repository that tightly
integrates and manages the VisualGen Team Suite development tools.
TeamConnection provides project-wide coordination across all phases of
the development life cycle. For example, it automates the application
build process and packages applications for quick and reliable delivery,
as well as provides the underlying connection services for the complete
VisualGen Team Suite, COBOL, and the C Set ++ development environments.

IBM Exchange for OS/2, a companion product for TeamConnection, helps
customers protect their existing application development investments by
enabling them to migrate their data models into TeamConnection.

IBM DataAtlas for OS/2
----------------------

IBM DataAtlas for OS/2 provides a central point of control and
standardization for the data definitions of relational databases,
hierarchical databases and high-level language applications. Database
administrators and data designers can use DataAtlas to create, maintain,
and generate data descriptors.

VisualGen
---------

A new release of VisualGen, IBM's enterprise client/server application
development tool for business-critical applications, allows programmers
to develop both client and server code concurrently -- for use on both
workstations and the host.

It brings new functionality through support for Windows clients, and C++
application generation for OS/2 and AIX. In addition, IBM has announced
its intent to extend VisualGen support to the OS/400 operating system.

"We selected VisualGen as our strategic application development tool,"
said Ronald J. McEvoy, senior vice president and CIO, Fred Meyer, Inc.,
Portland, OR. "VisualGen leveraged our investment in existing
programming tools. It also allowed us to use our iterative prototyping
approach, where we work with our users to continually refine
applications during the development process. With VisualGen, our
developers can take advantage of cooperative processing. We expect to
see a 2 to 1 productivity improvement."

                    +--------------------------------+

Partners in Development builds on the ASsociation/400 business partner
support program. Through Partners in Development, IBM will provide
extensive technical support from the AS/400 Software Partner Lab in
Rochester, Minnesota, and at application support centers around the
world.

Because ASsociation/400 is the primary communication vehicle for the new
Partners in Development organization, the entry membership fee for
ASsociation/400 for 1994 has been reduced to 250 USD per year.

Technical support will include hands-on courses on product strategies,
early development for unannounced products, and post-announce product
issues. It will include courses for developers seeking to exploit
emerging technologies, including:

o Client/server implementation
o Object-oriented programming
o Multimedia
o Imaging
o Fax and mobile network access
o Integrated Language Environment (ILE) assistance
o OS/400 assistance

Customized courses also will be offered at vendor sites. In addition,
Partners in Development has a toll-free phone number, 1-800-365-4426,
extension 400, through which independent software vendors can get
immediate help finding the appropriate person to assist with any AS/400
matter.

Partners in Development also will assist in vendors' marketing and
delivery programs. For example, vendors will be able to work with the
Rochester lab's fulfillment center on their system configuration
proposals for customers, and to get their offerings included in IBM
configuration proposals. In addition, they will be able to have their
offerings pre-loaded in systems shipped directly from IBM. Assistance is
also available to business partners using the IBM AS/400 Portable One, a
full-function, portable model.

AS/400 Partners in Development also includes electronic access to IBM
developers through ASsociation/400 On-Line. The interactive service
provides all schedules, new offerings, and changes via a regular
newsletter and special mailings. It also includes developers' forums,
question-and-answer access to IBM technical support staff, bulletin
boards, and computer industry trade articles.

On-line support also will be available to vendors seeking to enhance
their marketing efforts with IBM's new Portable Sales Automation System
(PSAS). PSAS is a portable configurator and a suite of automated selling
tools with leading-edge graphics that runs on PC laptop or notebook
computers.

Membership in ASsociation/400 continues to provide its members with
benefits including developer support and two free software licenses per
year for IBM software development tools and products such as ImagePlus
and Ultimedia. ASsociation/400 members also receive education discounts

          +-------------------------------------------------+

Q1. What is The Developer Connection for OS/2?

A1. The Developer Connection for OS/2 is an annual subscription program
for application developers. Its purpose is to deliver: licenses to
developers for toolkits, productivity tools, development tools, and
sample code; licenses to the latest pre-release code, so developers
can prepare for and simulate future environments; and the most
up-to-date versions of technical documentation about OS/2.

The Developer Connection for OS/2 consists of four issues (CDs and a
newsletter) delivered over the course of one year, plus access to
The Developer Connection section of the OS2DF2 forum on CompuServe
    until the subscription expires.

For those subscribers who are not members of CompuServe, IBM has
established the DEVCON CFORUM on the OS/2 BBS under TalkLink

Q3. If I belong to the DAP, do I get a discount?

A3. Members of US Commercial Services or US Premier Services within
the US Developer Assistance Program may purchase The Developer
Connection at a reduced price, 119 USD for an annual subscription
and 45 USD for each additional license. US members of the
Worldwide DAP, however, purchase The Developer Connection at the
    regular 199 USD price.

European DAP members may purchase The Developer Connection at a
reduced rate. When members call to order, the operators will give
the reduced price in the appropriate currency.

Q4. What does The Developer Connection CD contain?

A4. The CD(s) contains pre-release versions of many IBM OS/2 and LAN
products, internal development and productivity tools, bitmaps, and
demos of products from IBM and others. Each CD also includes the
latest release level of The Developer's Toolkit for OS/2, the
Multimedia Presentation Manager Toolkit/2, and the Pen for OS/2
Developer's Toolkit. In addition to these programs, the CD contains
sample source code that can be used to develop your own
applications. The CD also contains thousands of pages of
    documentation, with a search facility.

Q5. What advantages do I get from the CompuServe forum for DevCon that
    I didn't have before?

A5. Subscribing to The Developer Connection entitles you to access the
private Developer Connection section of the OS2DF2 forum on
CompuServe. IBM developers will be answering questions and carrying
on dialogs with subscribers on a full-time basis and will respond to
your comments/issues/questions on a timely basis.

Q6. How many copies of DevCon do I have to subscribe to for my
company? I have many programmers, do I have to buy one for each?

A6. After your company has purchased its initial subscription to The
Developer Connection, you may buy as many additional licenses as you
want. For each additional license you order, 4 times over the year
you will receive the current newsletter and a Proof of Additional
License certificate, which entitles you to make one additional copy
of the contents of the current CD volume. Additional licenses work
best for Local Area Network development environments. (Example; If
you have 10 developers on a LAN, you could buy one regular license
    and 9 additional licenses.)

Q7. I've heard that the DevCon program will grow in the future. What
will I see over the next year?

A7. The Developer Connection for Image Plus Visualinfo was just
recently announced. Future direction for The Developer Connection
has not been announced; however, we are considering CDs for specific
areas of interest to developers such as: Device Driver Source, AIX,
    Object Oriented, etc.

Q8. Does my license to use the release-level toolkits contained on
The Developer Connection CD end if I do not renew my subscription at
the end of my annual membership?

A8. In general, the license to use the code on each Developer Connection
CD is shipped with the CD and expires 120 days after receipt of that
issue or upon receipt of the next CD issue, whichever comes first.
However, your licenses to the following toolkits continue beyond
expiration of your subscription: The Developer's Toolkit for OS/2,
Multimedia Presentation Manager Toolkit/2, and Pen for OS/2
Developer's Toolkit. As long as you adhere to the terms and
conditions of the agreement, your license to the abovementioned
    toolkits does not terminate.

Q9. Is the Developer Connection program available outside North America?

A9. The DevCon program has been announced in the US, Canada, Europe,
Middle East, Africa, Mexico, Brazil, and the Asia / Pacific
countries. It is currently available in all of these geographies.

            | for OS/2 and LAN Server |
            +---------------------------------------------+

IBM's Personal Software Products division sponsors a Professional
Certification Program from IBM for its OS/2 and LAN Server products. To
gain certification, individuals demonstrate their proficiency in
supporting selected products from IBM's PSP by passing a series of
tests.

Four Certified Roles
--------------------

Individuals, rather than organizations, can receive certification in
the following roles:

  o Certified OS/2 Engineer

Provides the skills to support OS/2 installations and develop
expertise in fine-tuning and customizing OS/2 platform systems.

  o Certified OS/2 Instructor

Helps candidates teach certified OS/2 engineers through extensive
  training and testing.

  o Certified LAN Server Administrator

Develops the skills necessary to support day-to-day network
operations, such as backing up the server, maintaining security, and
  loading applications.

  o Certified LAN Server Engineer

Provides service and support skills for LAN Server networks,
including network design, performance tuning, and installation.

  o Certified LAN Server Instructor

Enables participants to teach certified LAN Server engineers and LAN
Server administrators through extensive training and testing.

Testing
-------

Certification testing is administered by Drake Training and
Technologies, a worldwide provider of certification testing in the
computer industry. Classroom education is offered through the extensive
network of IBM Education and Training division and IBM Licensed
Education Center locations (in the United States only).
