       | IBM Advances Voice Recognition for Software Developers | vradv
       +--------------------------------------------------------+

Making it easier to add a new dimension to game, edutainment, and
application software, IBM announces an improved speech recognition
toolkit for software developers.

VoiceType Application Factory for Windows
-----------------------------------------

Called VoiceType Application Factory for Windows, the developer's tool
is based on the award-winning IBM Continuous Speech Series (ICSS)
products for Windows and OS/2. The toolkit, the newest member of IBM's
growing family of high-accuracy VoiceType speech recognition products,
comes with several utilities to help manage, experiment with, and
incorporate a variety of spoken words and phrases into programs.

Elevating the Use of Speech Technology
--------------------------------------

"VoiceType Application Factory demonstrates our continuing commitment to
elevating the use of speech technology in a broad range of Windows and
OS/2 base programs," said Howard Fields, director of marketing, IBM
Speech and Pen. "While we expect significant interest from developers in
the retail, medical, legal, travel, and mobile arenas, we feel that the
magic of speech technology could have a tremendous impact on the games
and edutainment world."

Harnessing the Spoken Word
--------------------------

By using VoiceType Application Factory to harness the power of the
spoken word, developers can take their programs to the next level of
interactivity. For example, a Flight Simulator player could launch
weapons or navigate their fighter jet through enemy territory using
voice commands.

No Pauses
---------

The technology implemented in this toolkit, which requires only 3 MB of
memory and 7.5 MB of hard drive space, provides for the recognition of
entire phrases and sentences delivered in normal or even faster speech
patterns without pauses. The speaker-independent capability of the
product also allows nearly anybody to use the product without training
the system to accept their voice.

ISVs Using IBM's Speech Development Tools
-----------------------------------------

"IBM's speech recognition provides the most significant opportunity for
users to change the way that they interface with the personal computer,"
said Karen Jackson, vice president, Zeitech, Inc., a leading developer
of complex client/server application systems, rated as one of the top 50
fastest-growing, privately held companies by Inc. magazine.

In addition to Zeitech, IBM speech development tools are being used by
other leading developers of multimedia, on-line and business
applications, including:

-- 4Home Productions, the consumer software division of Computer
Associates International, Inc., a publisher of lifestyle software
products designed to enhance personal productivity

-- Voice Pilot Technologies, Inc., developers of interactive speech
recognition software for both vertical and horizontal markets

-- Knowledge Adventure Worlds, a leading-edge networked multimedia
company that creates and publishes 3-D, multi-user, on-line
    environments;

designers, specializing in the integration of speech with games and
    educational software products

-- Intertainment, a multimedia startup company headed by Hollywood
writers and executives, new media consultants, and speech
recognition experts which is producing the children's title
    Robby Rabbit Rhyme Reason-n-Remember."

Compatibility with Other Products
---------------------------------

The VoiceType Application Factory toolkit contains a set of fourteen C
function calls to control speech recognition with a C/C++ compiler.
Compatible compilers include Borland C++ version 4.0 or higher and
Microsoft Visual C++ version 1.0 or higher. In addition, VoiceType
Application Factory can be used with other products, such as Custom
Voice from A&G Graphics Interface, to create speech applications using
Visual Basic.

VoiceType Application Factory for OS/2 to be Enhanced
-----------------------------------------------------

In addition to this improved Windows version, IBM plans to enhance the
currently available OS/2 version of VoiceType Application Factory later
this year.

30,000-Word Dictionary
----------------------

VoiceType Application Factory recognizes words and phrases based on
its 30,000-word dictionary, which is extendable to include new words
and phrases specific to an application. The toolkit lists for 399 USD.
Dealers prices may vary.

     | IBM VoiceType Application Factory for Windows Version | vtypeann
     | 1.1 Lets Software Developers Add Speech Recognition |
     +-------------------------------------------------------+

(from the formal IBM announcement)

Get an edge over your competition by adding a whole new input dimension
to the software you develop -- the human voice. The IBM VoiceType
Application Factory gives you the tools you need to create applications
that understand the spoken word with high accuracy.

Unlike some other speech recognition systems, VoiceType Application
Factory requires no "training" of the software to the speaker's voice.
It can process speech from different speakers, allowing for the many
variations of human speech. It has been tested with a variety of speaker
accents.

With VoiceType Application Factory speech-enabled applications, your
users can speak at natural or even rapid rates. There is no need for
them to pause between words -- the program keeps up. This continuous
speech capability is well suited for command and transaction
applications that require high-speed control of user interfaces.

VoiceType Application Factory includes a sample speech-aware desktop
navigator application that allows you to command and control Windows
3.1 applications using voice commands. VoiceType Control Version 2.0 for
Windows allows you to navigate around the Windows desktop, open and
close Windows programs, control those programs once they are started,
and even enter data.

VoiceType Control comes with starter sets of commands for many popular
Windows programs and for the applets that are part of Windows 3.1. In
addition, VoiceType Control is able to "learn" new Windows programs that
are not already supported.

In addition to the over 30,000 words that appear in the VoiceType
Application Factory dictionary, you can add your own words, such as
proper nouns and industry-specific technical terms, simply by speaking
these words. By using the context-switching feature, you can load in
multiple vocabulary contexts, extending the practical reach of the
system to your own complex real-world applications. VoiceType
Application Factory can load up to 128 dynamically switchable contexts
(four active). Each active context can contain up to 1,000 active words.

VoiceType Application Factory runs on 486SX/8 MB personal computers and
supports popular consumer audio adapters, expanding the user base of
VoiceType Application Factory-enabled applications to the general public
consumer.

This product, previously known as IBM Continuous Speech Series (ICSS),
has been renamed VoiceType Application Factory to fit under the IBM
VoiceType brand. Future speech products will be named similarly to
enhance the VoiceType brand. The OS/2 and AIX versions of the IBM
Continuous Speech Series, announced 29 June 1993, are still available.

In Brief
--------

o Allows you to add speech recognition capabilities to the software you
     develop
o Runs on 486SX / 8 MB personal computers
o Includes sample Windows 3.1 desktop navigator
o Recognizes a variety of speaker accents
o Lets users speak at natural or even rapid rates
o Allows you to add your own words to the 30,000-word dictionary
o Supports industry-standard audio adapters

Highlights
----------

Unlike other automated speech recognition systems available today,
VoiceType Application Factory offers a combination of valuable functions
and options. This combination provides developers with enormous
flexibility.

The principal features of VoiceType Application Factory are:

o Speaker Independence -- Unlike some other speech recognition systems,
VoiceType Application Factory requires no speaker enrollment or
training. VoiceType Application Factory can process speech from
different speakers, allowing for the many variations of human speech.
VoiceType Application Factory has been tested with a wide variety of
speaker accents. Though performance varies somewhat, many accents
are well-recognized, and VoiceType Application Factory recognition
rates improve with repeated speaker use.

o Continuous Speech -- Speak at natural or even rapid rates. There is
no need to pause between words. VoiceType Application Factory keeps
up with you. The continuous speech capability is well suited for
command and transaction applications that require high-speed control
   of user interfaces.

o Large Vocabulary -- In addition to the over 30,000 U.S. English words
that appear in the VoiceType Application Factory dictionary, you can
add your own words, such as proper nouns and industry-specific
technical terms. By using the context-switching feature, VoiceType
Application Factory can load up to 128 vocabulary contexts, extending
the practical reach of the system to your own complex, real-world
environment. VoiceType Application Factory can load up to 128
dynamically switchable contexts, with four being active at any given
time. Each active context can contain up to 1,000 active words.

o Grammar-Guided Recognition -- VoiceType Application Factory is a
grammar-guided recognition system. The VoiceType Application Factory
compiler compiles grammars (text) into contexts (binary). This means
that VoiceType Application Factory is designed to listen for and
process specific sets of words and phrases based on predefined
grammars. A grammar is a predefined set of responses with a valid
syntax structure (sell {X} shares of {Y} stock). The VoiceType
Application Factory recognition engine uses context-related language
models to guide the search process used to decode text from speech.
The language models are in the form of bigrams, which are
word-to-word transition pairs and probabilities. These can be
   derived from:
   - Backus-Naur Form (BNF) grammars
   - Example texts

o Application Programming Interface -- Documented APIs give software
developers easy access to the speech recognition engine, reducing the
time it takes to speech-enable an application.

This enhanced version of IBM's command and control speech recognition
developers toolkit for Windows 3.1 offers the following enhancements:

o Faster response time
o Reduced processor requirements from 486DX/33 to 486SX/25
o Reduced memory from 5 MB to 4 MB
o Reduced disk requirements from 11.5 MB to 9 MB
o Out-of-vocabulary rejection (cough, sneeze, wrong word, etc.)
o Enhanced recognition accuracy, especially digits
o Automatic threshold setting utility and API calls (adjusts system
with regard to your microphone, audio adapter, and office
   environment)
o Increased dictionary size from 24,000 words to over 30,000 words

Performance Considerations
--------------------------

Applications created with Continuous Speech Series Version 1.0 require
that the grammars be recompiled to use VoiceType Application Factory
Version 1.1.

The VoiceType Application Factory has not been created to support speech
recognition over the telephone.

The initial data acquisition and compression of speech into the
recognition engine can have an impact on computer processor performance.
This compression usually takes less than one second but can monopolize
much of the CPU resource.

Microphone Considerations
-------------------------

Speech recognition requires the use of a good quality microphone.
Microphones that have been designed for use with a loudspeaker are not
conducive to speech recognition. With speech recognition, you want to
pick up just the speaker's voice and no other background sounds.

Speaker-independent speech recognition systems are generally sensitive
to the differences among various types of microphones. VoiceType
Application Factory was developed using data collected with the same
microphones used by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST) in its data-collection efforts. Therefore, VoiceType
Application Factory can be expected to perform optimally with these
microphones:

o Sennheiser HMD410-6 dynamic headphone microphone. Recommended for
environments where there is significant background noise. Also
recommended for the most demanding applications, such as numeric data
   entry.
o Sennheiser MD518 dynamic cardioid microphone.
o Sennheiser MD431U dynamic supercardiod microphone with on-off switch.

VoiceType Application Factory has a microphone adaptation feature that
allows it to adapt itself dynamically to different microphones. This
allows better recognition on a wider variety of microphones. A side
effect of this feature is that, during the first utterance, VoiceType
Application Factory is learning to compensate for the new microphone,
and the recognition accuracy suffers slightly.

In addition to the microphones listed, the microphone adaptation feature
has shown good results with all the microphones listed in the Hardware
Requirements and Software Requirements sections. These microphones are
more moderately priced than the Sennheiser microphones, but more
demanding speech-recognition tasks may provide better results with a
Sennheiser microphone. Try any microphone of reasonable quality.

Choosing a Microphone
---------------------

Choice of a microphone is important for the proper operation of
VoiceType Application Factory. Microphones that most often work well
with VoiceType Application Factory are directional and dynamic (see
below). Avoid omnidirectional microphones because they often pick up
keyboard noise. Decide what type of microphone to use by considering the
design and features of the microphone and your environment.

Microphone Design and Features
------------------------------

The highest-quality transmission of sound is achieved with microphones
that have the following features:
o Low impedance provides hum canceling and immunity from noise.
o Noise canceling reduces or eliminates the transmission of background
   noise.
o Directional receives sound from a single direction, the opposite of
omnidirectional. (Unidirectional, carioid, and supercardioid are all
   directional for our purposes.)
o Close-talking receives sound accurately from an immediate source.

In addition, microphones are commonly designed as dynamic or electret.
Dynamic is generally made of carbon crystal, which powers its own
signal. The best ones are usually expensive. Electret uses external
power. Although less expensive, they may have too much signal (gain) for
our use.

Your Environment's Noise Level
------------------------------

Your operating environment can have varying noise levels:

o Little or no background noise. This environment provides the maximum
flexibility in both microphone design and features. Noise canceling,
directional, and close-talking features may not be required.
o Moderate background noise. This environment requires a microphone
that is at least noise canceling, directional, or close-talking.
o Significant background noise. This environment requires a microphone
with both noise-canceling and close-talking features. A microphone
with an on-off switch can also provide an advantage.

Using a Microphone
------------------

Position the microphone so that it is approximately one inch away from
your mouth. If you are using a hand-held microphone, it should be 1.25
inches below your lips. In a noisy environment, hold the microphone as
close to your mouth as possible. In some cases, pointing the microphone
toward your mouth may improve its performance.

Audio Adapter Considerations
----------------------------

VoiceType Application Factory supports audio adapters that produce 8-bit
or 16-bit sample pulse-coded modulation (PCM) data. However, VoiceType
Application Factory accesses all audio adapters through the Windows MCI
interface, so most 8-bit and 16-bit, MCI-compliant audio adapters will
work well.

Audio adapters that produce 8-bit sample PCM data do not recognize
speech as well as 16-bit sample adapters, although many applications
will run well with 8-bit adapters. Noise is imposed on the original
analog signal when quantizing to 8 bits. Because the 8-bit sample must
be scaled up to 16-bit format, the quantization noise is also scaled up.
The resulting data is much noisier than data from a 16-bit adapter.

Audio Adapter Characteristics
-----------------------------

Characteristics of the VoiceType Application Factory-supported audio
adapters include:
o The VoiceType Application Factory-supported audio adapters accept
only monaural input from a microphone. If you want a stereo
microphone, a stereo-to-monaural cable connector must be used.
o The VoiceType Application Factory-supported audio adapter microphone
connection is a mini-mono-jack (2.5 mm). If your microphone has an
   XLR 3-pin professional audio connector or a full-size, phone-jack
audio connector, a conversion connector must be used. Your microphone
supplier or local electronic parts store can help you obtain this
   connector.
o Some audio adapter drivers supply mixer software. If you find
that VoiceType Application Factory does not hear any speech,
check the mixer program to make sure that the audio input volume
is not set to off or not too low. This is particularly evident
with Pro Audio Spectrum adapters. Also, the Sound Blaster 16
mixer ships with the microphone volume set to zero. If you
install a Sound Blaster 16 and VoiceType Application Factory
indicates that the signal is silent, you should set the mixer
   volume.
IMPORTANT: When you install an audio adapter, place it in a slot that
is as far away as possible from the LAN card. The LAN card emits RF
signals that may interfere with speech recognition.

Multiple Audio Adapter Support
------------------------------

If you have more than one audio adapter in your system, you must tell
VoiceType Application Factory which adapter is to be used. This value is
the Audio Card Number. You specify this value in both the Configuration
Profile window of the Development Environment and the AudioCardNumber
parameter in the ICSSStartConversation API Call.

The audio adapters in your computer are numbered internally, beginning
at 0, depending on the order that the audio adapter drivers are
installed. By default, VoiceType Application Factory uses the number 0,
the first audio adapter installed in your computer.

          | IBM Expands Award-Winning VisualAge to C++ |        prvisagc
          +--------------------------------------------+

IBM announces VisualAge C++ for OS/2. VisualAge C++ combines the unique
visual programming construction technology of IBM's award-winning
VisualAge product with the robust, professional development tools from
its popular C Set ++ product. This powerful, object-oriented combination
allows developers to visually build parts and then combine these parts
to construct programs.

Powerful C++ Development Environment
------------------------------------

VisualAge C++ provides a powerful C++ development environment, including
the IBM Open Class Library. IBM Open Class is a comprehensive set of C++
building blocks, which isolates developers from complex system
application programming interfaces (APIs) and provides platform
independence. The product also contains integrated C++ tools and a
complete code generation environment that allows a professional
programmer to productively develop and deploy applications across the
enterprise.

"Customers today are walking a tightrope between business demands and
available resources," said Tim Negris, vice president, Application
Development Marketing, IBM Software Solutions. "VisualAge C++ delivers a
rich set of tools for writing parts and constructing applications that
help customers get the most out of their developers' talent in order to
meet business imperatives responsively and productively."

Positive Beta Customer Response
-------------------------------

Since the beta program was established in late 1994, customer response
to VisualAge C++ has been strong. Over 450 customers received the code.

Cyberworks Corporation is among a number of companies that have
evaluated VisualAge C++. "I live and die by the power of IBM's C++,"
said Steve Gardner, president, Cyberworks Corporation. "This new version
sets a standard for development environments with a fabulous new
browser, powerful new tool bar and multimedia classes, and the ability
to generate SOM objects directly from the compiler. I expect to reduce
my development time by at least 30 percent."

Philip Felice, vice president systems development, U.S. Trust, added,
"IBM's C++ and Open Class Libraries have given us robust tools on which
to base approximately one million lines of object-oriented client/server
code. We are eagerly anticipating this new version."

Unique Features
---------------

o Visual Application Construction -- speeds development time by letting
the developer rapidly build applications. Developers can construct
applications from parts by visually manipulating prefabricated
objects and then automatically generating C++ source code.
Additionally, visual construction shields developers from the details
of the underlying programming language, which significantly reduces
   the C++ learning curve.

o Data Access Builder -- revolutionizes the task of bringing existing
relational data into the object world. By visually mapping DB2/2
relational database tables to objects and generating all the
necessary C++ and SQL code, a programmer can quickly and accurately
create data objects for use in the visual builder.

o Direct-to-SOM compiler -- extends the robustness and portability of
IBM's System Object Model (SOM), which provides a CORBA-compliant,
highly efficient dynamic linking mechanism for creating and using
objects across various applications. The Direct-to-SOM compiler
allows developers to create SOM objects directly from C++ source code
by simply specifying a compiler option.

o  C++ Performance Analyzer -- gives developers a high-level view of a
program's runtime behavior unavailable through debuggers or browsers.
Through a graphical representation, programmers can quickly locate
performance bottlenecks and tune program behavior.

The VisualAge C++ family of programming tools provides:

o C and C++ compiler -- generates some of the fastest applications
available for OS/2. With the addition of a new 32-bit linker,
application build time is significantly reduced.

o Browser -- helps programmers understand the hierarchy of class
libraries and their C++ programs. The browser is capable of browsing
both C++ source code and compiled programs.

o Debugger -- simplifies the debugging process through an intuitive
user interface. It allows programmers to debug at the source level,
set break points, and handle advanced C++ functions such as templates
   and exceptions.

o Editor -- simple to use and language-sensitive, the editor is easily
customized to suit a programmer's preference.

Multi-Platform and Standard-Compliant
-------------------------------------

At CeBIT 1995, IBM announced the availability of C++ software
development tools for MVS, Sun Solaris, and the beta for OS/400. Through
multiple platform support, developers can achieve significant source
code portability throughout an enterprise.

VisualAge C++ embraces industry standards, including compliance with
ANSI C and ANSI C++, and the Object Management Group's CORBA
specification.

VisualAge C++ conforms to the IBM Open Blueprint. The IBM Open
Blueprint, which incorporates a wide range of standards, provides the
base upon which to build, run, and manage distributed applications in a
diverse multi-vendor world.

      | IBM AIX/DCE is Certified by Open Software Foundation | dcecert
      +------------------------------------------------------+

The Open Software Foundation (OSF) named IBM's AIX Distributed Computing
Environment (AIX/DCE) as the industry's first certified implementation.

Assures Interoperation
----------------------

The certification process assures customers that any implementation of
DCE, a base for open, distributed, client/server computing, fully
interoperates with other certified DCE solutions.

DCE for OS/2 Submitted Next
---------------------------

As part of its continuing commitment to open, distributed computing, IBM
submitted its AIX/DCE implementation to the OSF for certification. OSF
certified the implementation April 7. IBM intends to submit all of its
DCE implementations for certification, with OS/2 DCE next.

Open, Distributed Client/Server Computing
-----------------------------------------

"IBM's fundamental goal is open, distributed client/server computing
across multiple systems. DCE provides a widely-used infrastructure
across multiple systems, and OSF certification of IBM's AIX/DCE assures
interoperability," said Don Haile, general manager, IBM Networking
Software Division.

IBM and DCE
-----------

DCE provides a comprehensive, integrated set of services that support
transparent communications and resource sharing across distributed,
multiplatform networks. Customers can design and implement secure
applications with DCE's directory, time and security services.

With nearly a quarter of the 100 largest U.S. corporations using IBM
DCE, the value of DCE technology is clearly recognized. IBM customers
such as the Naval Space Command, Wells Fargo, and others are using DCE
to protect investment in hardware, software, and application development
costs.

IBM provides DCE implementations on MVS Open Edition, OS/400, AIX, OS/2
and Windows 3.1 platforms. The comprehensive set of fundamental services
in DCE provide the same look and feel regardless of the underlying
operating platform.

In addition to having the first OSF DCE certification, IBM in 1992 was
the first supplier to provide a commercially-available DCE offering.
IBM followed with the industry's first DCE-based distributed OLTP
technology, and the first PC network operating system based on DCE.

The Open Software Foundation
----------------------------

The OSF, based in Cambridge, Mass., has more than 380 members worldwide
that form a coalition of user and vendor organizations. Its goal is to
facilitate open systems, including interoperability, scalability,
portability, and usability.

          | OS/2 Warp Wins Seven Industry Awards in March | 7awd
          +-----------------------------------------------+

IBM's PC software star, OS/2 Warp, won seven major awards during March.

InfoWorld Product of the Year
-----------------------------

The readers of InfoWorld selected OS/2 Warp as their choice for Overall
1994 Product of the Year. Capturing this award for the third consecutive
year, OS/2 continues to outshine the competition in the 32-bit desktop
operating system arena. Earlier in March, OS/2 Warp received five awards
at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany, and received the Software Publishers
Association's "Codie" for Best Business Software. In all, OS/2 has won
56 major industry awards since version 2.0 shipped.

Five Awards at CeBIT
--------------------

At CeBIT, the world's largest computer trade show, PC Professional
Magazine gave OS/2 Warp its Innovation of the Year award in recognition
of creative concepts and revolutionary technology. CHIP Magazine and DOS
International named OS/2 Warp the Operating System of the Year; 1+1
Magazine recognized Warp with a Software Marketing Quality award; and a
fifth award for Design Excellence from the Industrie Forum honored
Warp's user interface.

SPA Best Business Software Award
--------------------------------

At the SPA's Excellence in Software awards ceremony, OS/2 Warp was named
product of the year out of over 700 nominees and six finalists in the
business software category. The other finalists were Collabra Share,

       | LAN Server 4.0 Named 1995 Departmental NOS of Year | ls40awrd
       +----------------------------------------------------+

IBM's OS/2 LAN Server 4.0 earned another major award at the industry's
biggest networking show, NetWorld+Interop, when LAN Magazine named it
1995 Departmental Network Operating System of the Year.

"With a well-placed one-two punch, LAN Server from IBM entered the
fray," reported the magazine. "Available in two versions, Entry and
Advanced, the product has already turned more than a few heads."

Second Major Honor
------------------

The award, for the Entry version, is the second major honor for LAN
Server 4.0 since its September debut at NetWorld+Interop in Atlanta,
where it won the Data Communications/LAN Times Best of Show trophy.

The Real Muscle
---------------

In announcing the Departmental NOS of the Year award, LAN Magazine said
easy graphical installation and centralized administration were among
the features that moved LAN Server ahead of the competition.

"The real muscle in this new release is its object-oriented,
drag-and-drop GUI. Installation has been streamlined with a
self-configuring setup option for standard environments and a customized
configuration option. IBM also added a single logon and centralized
administration for easy management," LAN Magazine said.

Other Beneficial Features
-------------------------

Other features cited as particularly beneficial to departmental
customers were LAN Server's integrated TCP/IP for multiprotocol support,
the ability of administrators to restrict the disk space available to
specific users, and the potential cost savings because the product does
not require a dedicated server.

"LAN Server 4.0-Entry is the ideal network operating system for small
companies and workgroups. It is generally available for under 550 USD
and offers great performance and a broad range of powerful features,"
said Phil Powers, director of LAN Systems Marketing, IBM Personal
Software Products.

             | IBM Offers Free Utility to Migrate | nwaremig
             | NetWare Sites to OS/2 LAN Server |
             +------------------------------------+

IBM announces the availability of a powerful utility that makes it easy
for NetWare users to migrate to OS/2 LAN Server and its unmatched
usability, interoperability, and scalability.

NetWare to LAN Server Migration Utility
---------------------------------------

The NetWare to LAN Server Migration Utility is available free of charge,
and is designed for the 1.5 million users of NetWare 2.x or 3.x. Novell
has withdrawn support for NetWare 2.x, and has stopped development on
NetWare 3.x, in an effort to migrate users to NetWare 4.1.

OS/2 LAN Server is a non-proprietary system that supports most major
operating environments and offers customers unprecedented ease of use
and management. LAN Server's intuitive, drag-and-drop user interface
reduces costs by minimizing administration time, and typically can be
installed and running less than two hours.

Already in Practical Use
------------------------

The NetWare Migration Utility has already been used in
NetWare-to-LAN-Server migrations by the Atlanta Committee for the
Olympic Games (ACOG) and BI-LO supermarkets, a seven-state chain. Among
factors that helped them decide to migrate, both companies cited ease of
management.

The utility was built by IBM to help the Atlanta Committee for the
Olympic Games migrate 18 NetWare servers to LAN Server and more than 300
Windows clients to OS/2, while keeping the ACOG network running without
interruption.

Olympic Committee Choice
------------------------

ACOG chose OS/2 LAN Server because it was looking for an integrated,
stable, easy-to-manage platform for more than 250 LANs throughout
Atlanta and Georgia, according to Kuba Sliwinski, ACOG Program Director,
Delivery Systems Architecture.

"OS/2 LAN Server is the only platform that can be implemented in our
environment to ensure stability, reliability, centralized network
management, data integrity, and compatibility," Sliwinski said. "In
addition to stable technology, IBM provided excellent support for
migration."

BI-LO Supermarkets Preference
-----------------------------

Ed Heaton, a systems integrator with RightSource Inc. in Greenville SC,
also used the utility to migrate BI-LO Supermarkets from NetWare to OS/2
LAN Server. BI-LO wanted to consolidate its operations on one platform,
and chose LAN Server for its ease of use and its domain controller
concept, which allows for centralized management.

"LAN Server's domain concept lets BI-LO add servers as needed and manage
them all from one server," Heaton said. "Also, using LAN Server doesn't
require a lot of technical knowledge, and this customer loves that ease
of use."

Powerful Function Plus Drag-and-Drop
------------------------------------

The NetWare Migration Utility combines powerful function with
drag-and-drop ease. It interrogates the NetWare server for critical data
such as users, groups, files, and security information. After
administrators decide which data they want to migrate, they can drag and
drop the resources from the NetWare directories into OS/2 LAN Server.
Administrators can perform a one-to-one server migration or consolidate
multiple NetWare servers into a single LAN Server machine.

Secure Migration
----------------

The utility ensures secure migration by mapping the entire NetWare
server to OS/2 LAN Server, including binderies and directories. The
migration also maintains the trustee rights and file attributes of the
NetWare server, eliminating the need to recreate these security features
on OS/2 LAN Server. New passwords are assigned automatically during
migration.

Unique Features Not Found in NetWare
------------------------------------

LAN Server features like drag-and-drop administration, domains, and
aliases are not found on NetWare 2.x and NetWare 3.x.

LAN Server supports Windows, DOS, OS/2, Macintosh, and NT clients.

How to Obtain the NetWare Migration Utility
-------------------------------------------

The NetWare Migration Utility is available for download on the IBM
LAN Server Home Page on the Internet at
ttp://www.austin.ibm.com/pspinfo/lansrvr.html or by calling
1-800-879-2755 within the USA.

         | Six Leading Databases Now Available for AIX V4 | v4aixdb
         +------------------------------------------------+

IBM announces that six of the UNIX industry's leading database
developers have completed testing and certification of their products on
IBM's AIX Version 4 operating system.

Covers 80 Percent of UNIX Database Server Products Sold
-------------------------------------------------------

Products are now available from IBM's Software Solutions Division,
Informix, Oracle, Progress, Red Brick Systems, and Sybase, Inc. These
vendors represent 80 percent of all UNIX database server products sold
worldwide, and account for nearly one million installed licensees.
Moreover, they support thousands of business-critical applications that
can now take advantage of IBM's RISC System/6000 (RS/6000) symmetric
multiprocessor (SMP) servers. IBM worked closely with each developer to
ensure that their products were optimized for the RS/6000 environment.

Unparalleled Levels of Database Support
---------------------------------------

"Customers are looking for high-performance, scalable solutions that
will grow with them as their computing needs grow," said Donna Van
Fleet, vice president, AIX Systems Development, IBM RISC System/6000
Division. "These leading database products certified on AIX Version 4,
coupled with the power of our SMP servers, allows IBM to offer customers
unparalleled levels of database support."

AIX Version 4
-------------

AIX Version 4, IBM's industry-leading UNIX operating system, offers
customers a state-of-the-art, scalable UNIX platform that supports IBM's
PowerPC, POWER2, and POWER-based systems, including RS/6000 servers and
client workstations. AIX Version 4 has been branded XPG4 base-compliant
by X/Open Limited, and is on target to provide support for the newly
finalized Single Unix Specification (formerly known as SPEC 1170) in a
future release.

Database Product Support
------------------------

The six companies and their database products certified on AIX Version 4
are:

IBM
---

IBM's DB2 for AIX has been certified to run on AIX Version 4 and IBM's
new RS/6000 SMP line of servers. DB2 for AIX has the highest audited
TPC-C performance of any database product on the RS/6000. IBM is the
largest producer of database management software in the industry today.
IBM's world-class relational database family is built on the
industrial-strength foundation of DB2. Eighty percent of the Fortune
500, including the top 100 companies, rely on DB2 database solutions to
manage data on mainframes, minicomputers, RISC workstations and servers,
and personal computers.

Informix
--------

Informix Software Inc. has certified their powerful INFORMIX-OnLine
Dynamic Server 7.1, the company's multi-threaded, symmetric

      | IBM Launches International Business Partner Program | intlpart
      +-----------------------------------------------------+

Doing business around the globe just got easier for IBM customers under
a new initiative that will cut through red tape in procuring, delivering
and maintaining PC systems.

The IBM International Business Partner Program leverages the worldwide
strengths of IBM and its Business Partners on behalf of international
customers, who increasingly require more global support.

Single Point of Contact
-----------------------

The new program enables customers to have a single point of contact to
ensure comprehensive, worldwide support for PC procurement, delivery,
warranty, multicurrency billing, and value-added tax reclaim. IBM has
replaced country-by-country pricing with standardized pricing in each of
five worldwide geographies -- Asia/Pacific, EMEA (Europe, Middle East,
Africa), Japan, Latin America, and United States/Canada.

IBM Resources in All Geographies
--------------------------------

IBM is deploying resources from its International Customer Office,
headquartered in Research Triangle Park NC with offices in each of the
geographies, to ensure the success of this program.

"Customers should not be burdened with 10, 15, or 20 different contacts
for ordering and distributing PCs across several geographies," said
William E. McCracken, general manager of Worldwide Marketing and
Customer Fulfillment for IBM. "Under the International Business Partner
Program, our customers have a single point of control, simplified
ordering, and improved ability to manage their I/T costs."

Six Remarketers Constitute First Group
--------------------------------------

IBM has designated six remarketers as the first group of International
Business Partners for IBM PC systems. The six -- Computerland
International/Vanstar, Entex Information Systems/ Info'Products Europe,
Inacom, International Computer Group (ICG), International
Tele-communications Services (ITS/SITA), and MicroAge International --
have existing international coverage and will work together with IBM and
local remarketers globally to serve end users.

Follow-On to IBM International Warranty Service
-----------------------------------------------

This initiative complements a similar international program for midrange
computer systems that IBM launched last year. The International
Business Partner Program follows the establishment last October of the
IBM International Warranty Service, covering more than 120 countries and
enabling customers to obtain IBM's world-class service and support in
any region of the globe.

             | ACOG and IBM Team Up to Launch 1996 Olympic | acogwww
             | Games Information on the World-Wide Web |
             +---------------------------------------------+

462 days until the Opening Ceremony!

Now, when you take a ride on the Information Highway, you can make one
of your stops the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games.

1996 Olympic Games WWW Server
-----------------------------

Millions of people around the world will be able to access official
information about the 1996 Olympic Games by connecting with the 1996
Olympic Games' World-Wide Web (WWW) Server on the Internet. Just point
the browser to http://www.atlanta.olympic.org and there it is -- the
1996 Olympic Games Home Page.

All the Latest News About the Olympic Games
-------------------------------------------

Established by The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) in
conjunction with IBM, this new server will provide a wealth of
continuously updated facts, figures, photos, illustrations, video, and
audio content -- all aimed at providing the latest news possible on the
what, when, and where of the sports, as well as how to buy tickets and
be a part of the excitement.

Serving the Large Demand for Information
----------------------------------------

Making the delivery of this information possible are powerful,
high-performance, parallel computers from IBM. "The 1996 Olympic Games
Server is a great example of how organizations and companies can benefit
from the power of the Internet," said John Patrick, IBM vice president
of Internet applications, who delivered the keynote speech at Internet
World '95. "Information about the 1996 Olympic Games is in high demand
around the world. By putting it on the Internet, the data will be
available to more people than ever before, it will be available at any
time, and it can be updated instantly. As we've learned from other
customers, the Internet is an invaluable tool to make information easily
accessible to a very wide audience."

Donna Jonsson, ACOG deputy managing director of Communications,
emphasized, "Interest about the 1996 Olympic Games is worldwide, and
that interest is increasing rapidly as the summer of 1996 moves closer
and closer. The Internet is an extremely effective means of responding
to that interest and providing the most up-to-date information
possible."

The universal appeal of the 1996 Olympic Games is expected to make the
new WWW server a highly popular site for the estimated 30 million
Internet users around the world.

First Olympic Organizing Committee to Use the Internet
------------------------------------------------------

ACOG -- the first Olympic organizing committee to establish a WWW server
-- began actively investigating the possibility of putting information
on the Internet last year. "With more and more of the plans for the 1996
Olympic Games being finalized, we wanted to take full advantage of the
latest in technology tools to ensure the widest distribution of Olympic
information ever," said Bob Neal, ACOG's director of Information Systems
Services. "With ACOG's presence on the WWW, we believe we're setting a
precedent that other organizing committees will follow."

IBM -- as the Official Internet Information Systems Provider for ACOG --
is designing and formatting all ACOG data for the WWW. "We are
capitalizing on IBM's experience in integrating the Internet into
enterprises and on our expertise in content hosting, as well as our
track record for providing companies with improved communication,
marketing, and productivity tools," Patrick said.

IBM is supplying all hardware, systems software, WWW applications,
technical support, systems integration services, operations, facilities,
document design, HTML implementation, security, and access tracking for
the 1996 Olympic Games Server.

IBM Internet security products allow retrieval of WWW information via
the Internet, but prevent removal or manipulation of data.

Scalable IBM Servers
--------------------

IBM Scalable POWERparallel System SP2 and RISC System/6000s will be the
web servers for the new Olympic information site. As the volume of
information about the 1996 Olympic Games increases, the servers have the
flexibility to scale up -- with additional processors and disk storage
-- allowing more users to access the WWW site simultaneously.

SP2, the most powerful offering in IBM's RS/6000 product line, runs AIX
-- the company's open, industry-standard UNIX operating system. This
parallel supercomputer can assign different tasks to each node --
serving database information, video, or acting as a web server. Each of
the nodes can work in parallel or independently -- whichever is faster
-- on computing- or data-intensive jobs, responding to user requests.

As information demands increase, mirror SP2 and RS/6000 systems will be
added to expand the 1996 Olympic Games WWW server. "The implementation
and use of the SP2 as a web server on the Internet for ACOG is what the
next generation of computing will look like," noted Patrick. The 1996
Olympic Games Internet server will interface with the IBM ES/9000 and
AS/400 systems, which run the Results (sporting events) and Info'96
(information/ communications) applications for the 1996 Games. Working
together, the systems will offer access to real-time news and
information on the Internet.

Nine Categories on the Server
-----------------------------

Listed at http://www.atlanta.olympic.org, the 1996 Olympic Games Server
presents an array of information under nine major headings:

o Welcome -- both video and audio greetings to Internet users; the 1996
Olympic Games at a glance; and answers to frequently asked questions.

o Sports and Venues -- explanations of the sports of the 1996 Olympic
Games, competition formats, and a look at the venues that will host
the events, house the athletes, and provide the settings for visitors
   to gather.

o Official Programme -- time, date, location and more about every one
of the more than 561 sports sessions of the 1996 Games ... presented
to give Internet users schedule information by sport, by day, or by
venue. Also allows users to generate their own Olympic schedule by
   selecting event, day, and location.

o Travel Information -- a look at Atlanta and an update on
   accommodations and transportation.

o Tickets -- when and where Olympic ticket brochures will be available,
how to order and -- coming 1 May -- more information to help make
getting Olympic tickets as easy as possible.

o Official Products -- they're attractive and popular, and purchasing
them helps support the U.S. Olympic Team and the 1996 Olympic Games.
What's available, where to buy, and how to get a newly published
consumer catalog are all part of the information that's presented.

o Sponsors -- the companies whose contributions and support are funding
the 1996 Olympic Games -- and the many roles these companies are
   playing in the 1996 Games.

o Cultural Olympiad -- since 1912, the Olympic Games have celebrated
sports and the arts. With a spectacular array of art exhibits, dance,
theater, and music, the 1996 Olympic Arts Festival will be an
exciting and entertaining component of the Centennial Olympic Games.

o What's New -- the latest press releases from ACOG -- with new
releases added to the 1996 Olympic Games server the moment they are
issued -- and a look at key dates ahead in the countdown to the
   summer of 1996.

"This is the first phase of information we will be providing," Jonsson
pointed out. "We will continuously update and add more and more detail."

Real-Time Results to Be Posted
------------------------------

The most extensive delivery of information will occur during the 1996
Games, with ACOG and IBM now developing plans for presentation of
real-time results and other features.

As the worldwide information technology sponsor, IBM is providing
systems and people to help plan, manage, and run the Olympic Games
through the year 2000.

immediate help finding the appropriate person to assist with any AS/400
matter.

Partners in Development also will assist in vendors' marketing and
delivery programs. For example, vendors will be able to work with the
Rochester lab's fulfillment center on their system configuration
proposals for customers, and to get their offerings included in IBM
configuration proposals. In addition, they will be able to have their
offerings pre-loaded in systems shipped directly from IBM. Assistance is
also available to business partners using the IBM AS/400 Portable One, a
full-function, portable model.

question-and-answer access to IBM technical support staff, bulletin
boards, and computer industry trade articles.

On-line support also will be available to vendors seeking to enhance
their marketing efforts with IBM's new Portable Sales Automation System
(PSAS). PSAS is a portable configurator and a suite of automated selling
tools with leading-edge graphics that runs on PC laptop or notebook

CompuServe. IBM developers will be answering questions and carrying
on dialogs with subscribers on a full-time basis and will respond to
your comments/issues/questions on a timely basis.

Q6. How many copies of DevCon do I have to subscribe to for my
company? I have many programmers, do I have to buy one for each?

A6. After your company has purchased its initial subscription to The
Developer Connection, you may buy as many additional licenses as you
want. For each additional license you order, 4 times over the year
you will receive the current newsletter and a Proof of Additional
License certificate, which entitles you to make one additional copy
of the contents of the current CD volume. Additional licenses work
best for Local Area Network development environments. (Example; If
you have 10 developers on a LAN, you could buy one regular license
    and 9 additional licenses.)

Q7. I've heard that the DevCon program will grow in the future. What
will I see over the next year?

A7. The Developer Connection for Image Plus Visualinfo was just
recently announced. Future direction for The Developer Connection
has not been announced; however, we are considering CDs for specific
areas of interest to developers such as: Device Driver Source, AIX,
    Object Oriented, etc.

Q8. Does my license to use the release-level toolkits contained on
The Developer Connection CD end if I do not renew my subscription at
the end of my annual membership?

A8. In general, the license to use the code on each Developer Connection
CD is shipped with the CD and expires 120 days after receipt of that
issue or upon receipt of the next CD issue, whichever comes first.
However, your licenses to the following toolkits continue beyond
expiration of your subscription: The Developer's Toolkit for OS/2,
Multimedia Presentation Manager Toolkit/2, and Pen for OS/2
Developer's Toolkit. As long as you adhere to the terms and
conditions of the agreement, your license to the abovementioned
    toolkits does not terminate.

Q9. Is the Developer Connection program available outside North America?

A9. The DevCon program has been announced in the US, Canada, Europe,
Middle East, Africa, Mexico, Brazil, and the Asia / Pacific
countries. It is currently available in all of these geographies.
